The book Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline was chosen as the Greene County Reads for 2015. This historical fiction book is about a 17 year old girl named Molly who is trying to stay out of juvenile hall by helping an elderly woman named Vivian clean out her attic. By going through Vivian’s possessions, Molly learns of Vivian’s past as a young Irish immigrant who was sent by rail from New York City to an uncertain future in the Midwest. Molly, as a foster child, finds that she and Vivian have a lot in common as they think about their unanswered questions from the past.
Thursday, April 16, the libraries of Greene County hosted book discussions on Orphan Train in Churdan, Rippey, and Scranton which were led by Jan Scharingson (standing). There were 23 people attending at the Rippey library and they discussed the book’s characters, themes, symbols, settings, significant quotes, and the author’s writing techniques. The group enjoyed the refreshments provided by the library board and the engaging discussion on this important piece of America’s history.
Greene County Reads is a cooperative project of the Greene County Library Association and the Greene County board of supervisors. “Thanks to everyone involved who made this year’s effort another success,” a library spokesperson said.

Following the program several of our group stayed to visit with friends and tour the remodeled church. Rippey Methodist Guest Day will be held on Thursday, May 7, at 9:30 am. The invitations have been sent out and the women are busy baking egg muffins for the brunch while the crazy “Rippey Revelers” are practicing a new skit to present for the program. This year’s theme is Angels, and of course there will be a little devilment mixed in for good measure! “You all come!” a spokesperson said.
