  • 2 pm at the Rippey public library,
  • 7 pm at the Scranton public library.

Jan Scharingson will once again lead the discussions. Everyone is welcome to attend any or all the sessions and is free to all readers. Greene County Reads is a cooperative project of the Greene County Library Association and the Greene County board of supervisors.

Rippey library Easter egg hunt held April 1: The annual Easter egg hunt at the Rippey library was held Wednesday, April 1. There were approximately 20 youngsters who enjoyed the nice, but windy weather for the hunt.  The older kids helped hide the eggs for the younger kids and waited patiently until the eggs were “hidden” for their group, so they, too, could have a bag of eggs. A craft was made to take home and it was an hour of fun for the kids. The parents who came with their kids enjoyed watching  and visiting.

Former board member Mary Millard took on the challenge of filling the many plastic eggs and organized her helpers, librarian Andrea Williams, as well as board members Jo Bardole and Jean Borgeson, who helped make things go as smoothly as possible.

The library board thanked Rolling Hills Bank for the candy, Peoples Bank for the cupcakes and those who helped clean up after the party.

The Rippey Lions Club will meet for its regular meeting Thursday, April 16.  The meal will be served at 7 pm with the business meeting to follow.

The BYE, BYE BLUES met in the home of Doris Brown on Thursday, April 9.  There were six members present for brunch, served by Doris. The morning was spent visiting and reminiscing, as this was the first meeting of the season. Most are looking forward to the Rippey alumni party on May 23 and names on the alumni list of those whose letters were returned last year were brought to their attention, in hopes someone would know of their whereabouts.  Remembering the names really brought out the memories.

Rippey Ladies Aid met at the church on April 2.  The hostess, who forgot, was Jean Borgeson, so Maralynn Rinker came to the rescue.  Plans were finalized for the Guest Day on May 7.  Toni Roberts has been working hard on the skit and it promises to have some humorous moments.  The theme this year is Angels. Jo Bardole had the lesson for the meeting.

Rippey Lions Club Mother-Daughter Banquet and Awards: The Rippey Lions Club Mother-Daughter Banquet was held Thursday, April 9.  President Nancy Burrow welcomed the approximately 50 mothers and daughters.  The meal, prepared by members of the Rippey United Methodist Church under the direction of Kevin and Mary Hick, was served to the guests. The Washington Winners 4-H club assisted in serving the family style meal.

After the meal, the daughters’ welcome was shared by Toni Roberts and the responses were from her daughter, Lori Bardole and her granddaughter, Cassie Bardole. The following were recognized with flowers delivered by Maralynn and Myron Rinker:

The honors of oldest mother and oldest daughter went to Dorothy Groves of Rippey and her daughter, Judy (Groves) Busch of Ogden. The youngest mother present was Mallory (Roberts) Dillavou of Jefferson. The mother who traveled the farthest was Erin (Bardole) Englin and daughter Emma of Rockwell City.

Four generations of mothers and daughters present were Toni Roberts and her daughter Lori (Roberts) Bardole, both of Rippey, and granddaughter Mallory (Roberts) Dillavou and her daughter Kylynn Dillavou of Jefferson.

Also,  Midge Vannatta, her daughter Pat (Grow) McPherson of Jamacia,  her daughters-in-law Pam Grow and Lori Grow, of  Rippey, and her granddaughter  Jenny (Grow) Lauer and daughter Allie of  Perry.

Three generations present included Jo Bardole, Erin (Bardole) Englin and Emma Englin of Rockwell City; Kathy Jackson, Melissa Wallace and Angel Wallace;  Iva Jo Muir with her daughter Cheri (Muir) Kersey of Grand Junction and her granddaughter Kayla Muir of Rippey.

Toby the Kid from Ogden provided the entertainment and featured some of the audience in his program, including and Kelly Muir, Kayla Muir, Angel Wallace, Allie Grow, as well as Ethan Frederick of the Washington Winners 4-H Club. After serving the meal, the club members stayed for the program and a good time was had by all.

News in and around Rippey

Nancy and Dale Hanaman ventured to Rice Lake, WI, to celebrate their granddaughter Adyara Hanaman’s 16th birthday with her sister Adrianna and her dad Matthew. They celebrated the momentous birthday with a meal out and a birthday cake carefully baked and decorated by her Grandpa.

Easter Sunday a coop dinner was enjoyed at the Neese home.  Members who were present were Steve and Deanna Neese of Grand Junction and Lake Crystal, MN, Kate and Rob Doerhoff and Stacy of Ankeny.  Later visitors were Brock Grubbs and friend Cassie.  Kate and Alan, Neese, Emily, Josh, Molly and Max of Grand Junction, and Barbara and David Ovenshire, Riley, Keagan, and Delaney of Palo, IA, enjoyed the time they had together. Regrets were sent from the Strableys in Boone.

Easter was a busy day for the Robertses.  Following church Phil and Toni hosted a come and go luncheon for members of their family. Matt Roberts, Mallory and Gene Dillavou and children Jodin and Kylynn from Jefferson and Wesley Roberts from Emmetsburg were guests.  Wesley, age 2-1/2, is currently staying with his Aunt Mallory while her sister Morgan Roberts recovers from foot surgery. Also attending were Chris and Brenda Roberts of Rippey and Karen Roberts and son Dominik of Jefferson. After a combined lunch of pulled pork sandwiches and ham the group gathered outside to help their grandparents with yard cleanup. Brenda even managed to convince the little helpers that it was fun to pick up all the pine cones!

Later that afternoon the “second wave” appeared.  Lori and Cassie Bardole and Schyler Bardole with his fiancée Lauren King visited while introducing Cassie’s new puppy “Ozzie” to the resident canine Opie. The dogs got along well but the two cats, Picaboo and Sammy, were not impressed! After a brief lunch and visit they, too, departed.  What fun to have family close by to share meals and good conversation!

Jean Borgeson enjoyed Easter dinner in the home of Al and Ann Frederick of rural Jefferson.  It was a beautiful day for an Easter egg Hunt.  The older boys hid the eggs and when it was time, Taylor and Kale enjoyed looking for them. Taylor, Kane and Charlie tried their hand at breaking the piñata, which was a little challenging, as Al and Bret were holding the rope that the piñata was strung on. This was entertaining to watch.  Kale was waiting to scoop up the goodies!

Those attending were Bob and Fran Safely and Bob and Hazel Frederick of Jefferson, Sarah Byrns, Bill Frederick and Melissa Bosshart of rural Jefferson,  Bret and Lizzie Pierce and daughter Laura of Woodward, Alan, Sarah, Kane, and Kale Borgeson of Rippey, Charlie Gunn of Grand Junction,  and Mary Hinton and daughter Taylor of Adel.  Late afternoon visitors were Judy and Dennis Kemble of rural Jefferson.  Jerry Hinton missed the festivities because of illness.

Elayne and Dean Bice of Johnston and Jean Borgeson attended the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra on April 9 in Jefferson. Their brothers, Wayne and Floyd Darling, played with Jack and Jim Oatts during their college years at Drake, playing with the Des Moines Big Band before continuing their own musical careers elsewhere.
