High winds keep fire stoked, but one building saved

Firefighters battled in high winds Wednesday afternoon in Greenbrier Township, and although two buildings were lost and damage was estimated at more than $200,000, a third nearby storage bin was not damaged.

The fire, located at property owned by Tom and Craig Flack at 1243 305th St east of Cooper, was first seen as smoke in the distance by sheriff Steve Haupert. He arrived there at 2:15 pm and found a workshop fully engulfed in flames.

Before fire crews from Jefferson, Scranton and Bagley arrived, the fire had spread to a machine shop just north of the workshop. Greene County EMS also responded.

Flammable materials exploded as the machine shed burned but there were no injuries. Both structures, specialty tools, mowers and motorcycles were total losses. There was also damage done to three tractors. Fire crews were on the scene for almost three hours.
