Between 1854 and 1929, nearly 250,000 children from East Coast orphanages were loaned on trains and sent west to be “placed out” in new homes. That experience is the topic of this year’s Greene County Reads selection, Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline.
To enhance discussion of the topic, the Greene County librarians will host guest speaker Colleen Bradford Krantz Tuesday, March 31, at 2 pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Jefferson.
Krantz directed, co-produced and co-wrote the documentary “West by Orphan Train,” which has aired on Iowa Public Television. Krantz also wrote and co-produced the 2010 film “Train to Nowhere: Inside an Immigrant Death Investigation,” based on her book of the same name.
Formerly a newspaper reporter, Krantz is the creator of the News Tutor app and videos that help news consumers be more discerning viewers and readers.
There is no charge for Tuesday’s program. All ages are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
