The Jefferson city council at its March 24 meeting will consider adding stop signs and no parking zones in the area surrounding the new Hy-Vee store.
The meeting agenda includes consideration of a resolution approving the placement of stop signs and the first reading of an ordinance for the no parking zones.
The resolution in its draft form states that city staff and members of the city council have received requests from citizens that additional stop signs be placed, and that the chief of police and other city staff have reviewed increased traffic patterns and are recommending the stop signs in the interest of public safety.
Stop signs would be placed for northbound and southbound traffic at the intersection of Reed and Wilson and Reed and Vine; for eastbound traffic at the intersection of Adams and Vine; and for westbound traffic at the intersection of Adams and Wilson.
Also, the city ordinance pertaining to parking would be amended to prohibit parking on both sides of Wilson and of Vine St between Washington and Reed St; on the south side of Reed St between Wilson and Elm St; and on the north side of Adams between Vine and Elm St. Thirteen single family residences and two multi-family residences would be affected by the change.
A review of the Jefferson police department daily reports since the Hy-Vee store opened Feb. 24 shows one collision reported. On March 16 at 9:35 am a vehicle had a mechanical malfunction when it turned onto Wilson from Adams St. The malfunction caused the driver to strike a pickup truck parked on Wilson.
Additionally, the Greene County sheriff’s office responded to a collision March 3 at 10:52 am at the intersection of N. Vine and W. Washington St. There were no injuries.
