Greene County Chamber and Development invites residents to March Into March in a project of the Chamber’s business promotions committee. “Greene County has many opportunities for residents to incorporate walking in their daily lives. March Into March is constructed to create new daily habits, benefit local charities, benefit Greene County Chamber members, and start residents on a path this spring of exercising more,” said Chamber business promotions committee chair John Brunow.
Participants in March Into March can select one of two challenges. The March Challenge invites persons to form five-person teams with the goal of every person walking 10,000 steps a day. Participants can track their steps using a smartphone app or a pedometer. A team captain will report the team’s total steps each week to the Greene County Community Center, where the totals will be posted as the reflect miles walked across Iowa.
The second challenge, the 23-1/2 Hour Challenge, invites individual participants to report the number of days each week in which they meet a goal of walking 30 minutes.
Cost to participate in the March Challenge is $10 per person. Cost for the 23-1/2 Hour Challenge is $5. The money for each challenge will be kept separate. At the end of March, the team with the highest average step total will be able to designate a local charity to receive all the $10 registration fees as a donation. Likewise, the person who has the highest number of days of walking 30 minutes will be able to designate a charitable recipient for the total registration fees in that challenge. The total amount of each kitty will depend on the number of participants.
The walking need not be done in Jefferson.
Knowing that people get busy, Chamber members are offering a bit of slack. Member businesses will have coupons good for “credit” for 1,000 steps or 10 minutes of walking. Challenge participants can pick up a coupon with a purchase of $5 or more at the business. The credits can be reported each week as part of the step totals or days walked.
Registration forms are available at the Chamber office at 220 N. Chestnut or at the Community Center at 204 W. Harrison, or by clicking here: March Into March. Payment should be by cash or check (payable to Greene County Chamber). Registration deadline is Feb. 28.
