Rockets finish regular schedule with wins

The Paton-Churdan Rockets finished their regular schedule with wins at home Monday, Feb. 9 over the Woodbine Tigers. The girls claimed a 61-51 victory to take their record to 12-7. The boys’ lopsided 64-29 win put them at 16-3 overall.

The P-C girls took a 12 point lead in the first quarter, 14-2, and stretched the lead to 17 points, 35-18 at halftime. The Tigers first half points came as four three-point shots, two field goals and two free throws. P-C lead scorer, junior Carleigh Paup, had 20 points in the first half, including four 3-point baskets.

The Tigers outscored the Rockets 13 points to two in the first three minutes of the second half, narrowing the gap to only six points, 37-31 with five minutes to play in the quarter. Score at the end of the third quarter, though, was 54-42. The score with four minutes left to play in the game was 61-50. The Rockets did not score again, but the Tigers scored only one more point.

Paup finished the game with 39 points. For the game she made six 3-point baskets and five field goals, and was 11 for 12 at the free throw line (91.6 percent). Kasey Lane scored 11 points, Gracie Geisler scored six points, Sydney Koch scored three points and Robin Consier scored two points.

The boys’ game started slowly, with no points on the board after three minutes of play. The Rockets scored first and led 23-9 after the first quarter. Their scoring pace slowed only slightly; halftime score was 45-18.

Woodbine didn’t seem to spark in the second half, scoring just 11 points. Score was 60-27 at the end of the third quarter and 64-29 at the final buzzer.

Jake Carey led the Rockets with 30 points, 26 of them in the first half. He made three 3-pointers and was five for five at the free throw line. Noah Juergensen made 16 points, eight in each half. Colton Fitzpatrick scored six points with a 3-pointer in each half.

Thirteen Rockets played in the game and nine of them scored. Scoring two points each were Kourtlin Thacker, Joe Towers, Jake Berns, Chase Juergensen, Dylan Burgart and Jacob Bundt.
