Make and take a fairy garden at Master Gardener program

Greene County Master Gardeners are sponsoring a “make and take” community event. Jean Walker, Master Gardener, will present a hands-on workshop with participants creating their own fairy garden.

The workshop is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 12, from 7 to 8:30 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson. Reservations are requested by Friday, Feb. 6 as there are a limited number of participant spots. Cost is $15 per person. Parents and children are encouraged to participate together. Walker will also provide information and a demonstration on designing terrariums.

According to horticulture experts at Iowa State University Extension & Outreach, fairy gardens are a way to bring horticulture mixed with a whimsical theme to your yard. Most commonly, fairy gardens are designed in large pots or fun containers such as rain barrels, deep bird baths and wheel barrows. They can also be placed around tree stumps or by front door stoops to add a surprising landscape element for visitors. Small trinkets, Christmas clearance, old kids’ toys, craft store supplies and thrift shop finds help to set the scene for these fairy towns as gardeners fill in around the “props” with dwarf plants and succulents.
