The Greene County girls basketball team is at 4-1 after a 44-40 win over Nevada in Jefferson Friday night. The Rams’ faced a stronger defense than they had in the previous two games, with the Cubs holding them to only 14 points in the first half. The Rams had scored 70 and 72 points in their last two games.
The Rams were up 8-5 after one quarter of play but down 18-14 at the half. The Rams were ahead by one point at 30-29 at the end of the third quarter.
Shooting statistics from coach Chad Morton tell the story. The team’s field goal percentage was just 20 for the first half of the game. Shooting was more accurate in the second half, at 78 percent in the third quarter and 75 percent in the fourth. For the entire game, the girls shot at 43 percent. The coach’s stats have Nevada shooting at 36 percent.
Kayla Mobley led the Rams in scoring with 12 points including two 3-pointers. Marissa Promes had 11 points and Stacy Mears had nine points with one 3-pointer. Jolee Wessling scored eight and Hanna Promes and Hannah Onken each scored two.
“I really thought our girls handled the tight game well,” Morton said. “I thought our defense played very well rebounding and also our full court press.”
