Girls game in the record book
The Ram basketball teams once again won both games of a girl/boy doubleheader. The Rams hosted the South Hamilton Hawks at Greene County Middle School Tuesday. The girls won 72-35 and the boys won 73-66.
In the girls game, the Rams led 23-10 at the end of the first quarter and 48-20 at half-time. South Hamilton tightened its defense during the second half, holding the Rams to only 10 points in the third quarter while they scored 11 points. The score after three quarters was 58-31. The Hawks held the Rams to only 14 points in the fourth quarter, but the Hawks couldn’t find baskets and scored only four points.
The girls have put two games in the record book already this season. The 72 point score is the fourth highest score attained by a Ram girls team in 5-on-5 basketball. The 70 point score vs CMB Dec. 5 shares the Number 5 slot in the high score records. The Rams scored 70 points vs Winterset in January 2000. Coach Chad Morton supplied the archived records.
Senior Kayla Mobley led the team in scoring with 23 points. She made 10 of 10 free throws and one of three 3-point shots. She also set a new team record with 13 steals, breaking the record of 10 set by Ryanne Christensen in an early season game against Gilbert in 2008. S
enior Marissa Promes scored 12 points, senior Hannah Onken scored 10 points and senior Stacy Mears scored eight points, including two 3-point shots. Every player scored in the game, with senior Jolee Wessling at seven points, senior Tressa Rasmussen at six points, sophomore Kenna Marquardt at four points, and sophomore Hannah Promes at two points.
The Rams’ field goal percentage was 45 percent. Coach Chad Morton noted that the competition will be stiffer in the coming games.
Tuesday’s game and last Friday’s 70 point score against CMB brings the Rams’ average score to 57.5 points per game. They’re 3-1 overall and in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.
In the boys game, the Hawks started big with two 3-point baskets early in the game. They led 1-6 and then 3-6 before Ram senior Landon Braun put up a 3-pointer to tie the score at 6-6 just short of four minutes into the quarter. The Rams were ahead the entire rest of the game, with scores at the ends of quarters 16-12, 36-28, 54-46 and the final score of 73-66.
The biggest Ram lead came in the third quarter, being up by 12 points three different times. The Hawks threatened, though, in the fourth quarter, trimming the Rams’ lead to only three points, 58-55, with 5:10 left to play in the game. It was again a three-point game at 60-57 with 4:39 left to play. The Hawks sank four 3-point shots in the fourth quarter and seven for the entire game.
Sophomore Trey Tucker led the Rams in scoring with 29 points. Tucker made two 3-point shots but was only five for 10 at the free throw line. As a team, the Rams shot at 63 percent at the charity line.
Senior Landon Braun scored 12 points – three 3-point shots, one 2-pointer and one free throw. He also shot at 50 percent on free throws.
Junior Max Neese made eight points and sophomore Ried Lamoureux made seven point, with each of them making a 3-point shot. Junior Mitchell Gorsuch scored six points on 3-point shots. Junior Tyler Beger scored four points, and senior Riah Nelsen and junior Matt Gordon each scored three points. Junior Sico Boateng was the only other player to get time on the floor.
The boys are 3-0 overall and in the HOIAC.
