The home of Michael, Barbara and Jennifer Carlisle at 506 W. Hager St in Grand Junction was destroyed by a fire that likely started in the furnace late Friday night. Smoke was still coming from what was left of the home Sunday afternoon.
According to Jennifer Carlisle, she and her parents had gone to bed Friday night but a family friend living at the house had stayed up. He smelled smoke at about 11:30 and saw smoke coming from a furnace vent. He woke the Carlisles, called the fire department, and tried to cool the furnace.
The Grand Junction fire department, the Jefferson fire department and the Greene County sheriff’s office responded. The house was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived, according to information from sheriff Steve Haupert.
The three agencies responded to a rekindle at 7 am, and the Grand Junction fire department returned again for a rekindle at about 3 pm.
“The fire department did good,” Carlisle said. “They responded and they did what they needed to do. We’re very thankful for that.”
Jennifer Carlisle returned Sunday to see if she could retrieve a collage of childhood photos that hung on her bedroom wall. She was very happy the collage was mostly undamaged.
There were no injuries. The house was assessed at $16,600, according to the Greene County assessor’s website. Barbara Carlisle said it was insured.
