Luminarias aren’t just for Relay for Life. They’ll have a role at the Community Tree Lighting this Thursday at the courthouse.
The luminarias that last April honored loved ones who have died of cancer and celebrated cancer survivors at the Relay for Life will be displayed on a special “tree” in the east assembly room at the courthouse. Dustin Larsen’s industrial tech students at Greene County High School are creating the tree.
Outside, Relay for Life luminarias will light the sidewalks on the north side of the courthouse and at the Thomas Jefferson Gardens.
“The Relay for Life committee wants the Relay to be part of the community year-round, not just for a day. The students have worked hard on the display rack, and we hope people will take a moment to look at the luminarias,” said Relay chairperson Peg Raney.
The Community Tree Lighting event will begin at 5:30 pm. The first 200 people there will receive a certificate for a free Christmas cookie from Homestead Bakery. After the tree lighting, Santa Claus will talk with children at the top of the Bell Tower. The Community Tree Lighting is organized by Jefferson Matters: Main St.
