There were no serious injuries but traffic on Highway 30 at Scranton was limited to one lane for more than two hours Friday morning as debris from an accident at the intersection of Highways 30 and 25 was cleaned up.
According to information from Greene County sheriff Steve Haupert, Donald Ray Livesay, 45, of Panora was northbound on Highway 25 driving a pickup truck pulling an enclosed aluminum equipment trailer. Livesay stopped as posted, but as he proceeded into the intersection his trailer was struck by an eastbound semi-tractor with a flatbed load of steel. Driver of the rig was John Michael Gaffney, 48, of Rock Island, IL.
Gaffney was transported by Greene County Emergency Medical Services for evaluation; he was not thought to be seriously injured. The load of steel beams stayed secured on the trailer and did not enter the cab of the semi. Livesay was not injured. The trailer he was pulling came unhitched from the pickup truck and he was able to maintain control to a safe stop.
The aluminum trailer, which is owned by Pyramid Moving Services of Panora, was a total loss. The 2001 Ford F-250 pickup truck Livesay was driving is also owned by Pyramid Moving Services. The 2012 Freghtliner semi-tractor, owned by Ryder Truck Rental of Des Moines, sustained major damage. No dollar estimate was given.
Charges are pending further investigation.
The Scranton and Jefferson fire departments also responded to the scene.
