Seatbelt usage more than 92 percent in Iowa

IA Dept of Public SafetyDES MOINES – New survey results show that Iowans continue to obey the law and buckle up.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) requires each state to conduct a seatbelt survey, using NHTSA guidelines, to continue to receive federal funding for traffic safety campaigns.

In conjunction with Iowa State University, the Govern’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) conducted the statewide survey and determined seatbelt usage in Iowa has gone up to 92.8 percent this year from 91.8 percent in 2013.

The remaining 7 percent of non-seatbelt users account for 46 percent of all fatalities on Iowa roadways. The GTSB continues to provide positive public outreach that encourages traffic safety and seatbelt usage.

“The minute you buckle up in your vehicle, you have just increased your chances of surviving a traffic crash by about 45 percent. Please protect yourself, buckle up every trip, every time,” said GTSB bureau chief Pat Hoye.
