Letter to the editor

To the editor,

As we head toward the holiday season it is time for all of us to think about the THANKS we get in GIVING. It is at this time of the year when charities and organizations put out their pleas for us to donate so they can be of help to others. It is a time for us to gather with family and friends to celebrate all of the good things in our lives.

This time of year, also, makes us pause and think of our accomplishments and gives us an opportunity to set new goals.

In keeping with that theme, the Steering Committee for building a new Grand Junction community center would like to thank every individual and business whose giving has us well on the way to breaking ground for our new building. We are short just $110,000, and when we raise this final amount we will be eligible for a Vision Iowa grant.

On the second Wednesday of October, members of the steering committee made a presentation at the state capitol in front of the Vision Iowa board. Our grant application had already been read by them and we were invited to come in person and present our plan. To be eligible for any money from Vision Iowa, we have to have all of our money raised, and the sooner the better. Other groups from around the state are also asking for funding for their projects, and there is not enough money to distribute to everyone.

When you attend our Halloween soup supper, donate bushels of corn and beans at the co-ops, rock out with the three live bands at the Elks on Halloween night, buy food at an ISU football concession stand we man or just send in a contribution, each little bit adds up.

So, if you haven’t previously donated or would like to increase what you already have given, now is the time. The committee will return to the capitol the second Wednesday of each month to report to Vision Iowa on our progress. It is our goal to break ground on the building this coming spring. Thanks for all the support we have received from Greene County so far. Our final push may be our biggest challenge, but we know reaching our goal is possible.

Sincerely,

Jan Scharingson for the Grand Junction Building Committee Steering Committee
