The pretty September weather this week was perfect weather for bike rides, and John Brunow, owner of All Ability Cycles, shared the fun with residents at The Gardens assisted living facility.
Brunow took his “trike train” – connected delta style trikes – and spent Monday afternoon helping residents share a bike ride around the neighborhood. He’s done similar rides previously, and said the residents’ reaction is “wonderful.” “It’s been the inspiration that has gotten me involved in other things,” he said.

Brunow has also taken his Draisin Bliss out for rides. The Bliss is a trike with a platform on the front that accommodates a wheelchair. Persons in wheelchairs can have the “breeze in your face, sun on your heart” exhilaration that keeps bicyclists riding.
According to Brunow, studies have shown the sociability of bike rides is beneficial to residents of senior homes. Residents who are able to get out for rides need less medication, suffer less depression, have better appetites and socialize more. “The bikes start conversations about their first bicycle or about bike rides when they were kids. They’re a spark plug for remembering good times.
