Tree TracingsGreene County Genealogical Society
~by Valerie Ogren

Meeting notice:  The next meeting will be Saturday, Sept. 6,  at 10 am in the Jefferson public library.  Guest speaker will be Shirley Clark.  She is a member of the Greene County Pioneer Cemetery Commission and will give us an update on the commission’s activities.  The basement meeting room is handicapped accessible.  Guests are always welcome!

Last month:  Even though Rick Morain was called out of town and couldn’t be with us in person, his program was still very enjoyable.  Thanks go to the Historical Society for making the DVD of his April program in Cooper available to us.  It reminded me of an old commercial – “Is it live or is it Memorex?”
Naturalization records: In the last two issues of our Greene Gleanings quarterly newsletter, we have been printing a continuing list of names from early naturalization records in Greene County.  These very early records don’t give you much information to go on, but it is a place to start.  An example would be:  Clipperton, John J. – Canada – 11 Mar 1879 – Book 3, Page 160.  By searching the Greene County census records on https://familysearch.org/, you can follow the family in Highland Twp.  A complete listing of these records is available in the reference library.
Reference library: Hours are Wednesday afternoon from 1 – 4 and Saturday mornings from 9 – 12.  Other times may be arranged by appointment.  Volunteers will assist you with any research problems you may have.  Summer is still here and genealogists are still traveling.  Some of the surnames being researched recently are:  TUCKER, MORAN, THORNTON.  I have failed to mention lately that some of the material except Greene County records may be checked out by members.
