Rededication of Lindsey monument slated for Thursday

Lindsey monumentThe Darrell Lindsey monument on the south side of the courthouse will be rededicated in a short ceremony Thursday, Aug. 7, at 5:15 pm.

Captain Darrell R. Lindsey was born in Jefferson in 1919. He was a flight commander in a B-26 Marauder in World War II, and was killed in a bombing mission over northern France Aug. 9, 1944, 70 years ago. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroic action after the plane was hit by enemy fire. The Medal of Honor was presented Aug. 9, 1945. In November 1946, an American air base in Wiesbaden, Germany, was named Lindsey Air Station in his memory, and a monument was erected there in 1987. The monument was moved to the courthouse lawn in 1993, and was dedicated during the 1993 Bell Tower Festival.

VFW Post 9599 will conduct the rededication ceremony Thursday. Patriotic music will play from the Mahanay Bell Tower for 30 minutes starting at 5 pm.
