Registration deadline this Friday, Aug. 1
A workshop for individuals interested in learning more about home food preservation will be held Monday, Aug. 4, from 6 to 7:30 pm at the Greene County Extension office meeting room. Sponsored by ISU Extension and Outreach – Greene County, “Preserve the Taste of Summer” will help participants learn the methods to safely preserve produce from their gardens.
The focus of the workshop will be on hot water bath canning and freezing. “Participants will get hands-on experience in both techniques,” said Michael Cooley, county extension coordinator for Greene County Extension. “On top of that, you’ll get to help prepare and then sample fresh salsa and hopefully find out that home food preservation is not difficult.”
According to Cooley, the workshop will be of interest to any level of food preserver, from novice to experienced, since techniques are always changing to accommodate the latest research in food safety. The class will be presented by Holly Van Heel, ISU Extension and Outreach nutrition and health specialist for Greene County.
Pre-registration for the workshop by Friday, Aug. 1, is requested to ensure there are enough participants to hold the course. The cost of the session is just $5, which helps to cover materials and supplies.
To RSVP, contact the Greene County Extension office at 515-386-2138 or visit the office during normal business hours of 8 am to 4:30 pm at 104 W. Washington Street in Jefferson.
