Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey visited the Greene County Fair Thursday afternoon so he can “let people know that county fairs are alive and well in Iowa,” he said.
He started his day at the Wright County Fair in Eagle Grove, then stopped at the Webster County Fair in Fort Dodge and the Calhoun County Fair in Rockwell City before arriving in Jefferson. He and press secretary Justin Vande Hoef strolled through the livestock barns before talking with Greene County fair board secretary Doug Hawn.
Hawn briefed Northey on growth of the fair in recent years and on the upcoming fundraising project for new barns.
Northey also found Lily Muir, a junior 4-H member in the Washington Winners club, in the cattle barn. Lily and Northey shared stories of raising cattle. Northey perhaps gave Lily some good advice about cattle. She showed the reserve champion Angus heifer and her steer received a purple ribbon in its class of Greene County raised steers.
