Jefferson city officials encourage residents who use the city’s compost site at Daubendiek Park to self-police regulations there.
The subject of items improperly dumped there has been discussed several times at city council committee and full meetings. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources regulates such sites and prohibits some items, including plastic garbage bags. The site could be closed should the DNR determine it is non-compliant.
The city council has discussed increased monitoring of the site or limiting the hours it is open. At this time, the council hopes that reminders to residents will be enough, and that if a resident see someone using the site incorrectly, the resident will talk with the “offender” and explain what is allowed.
The site is available only to Jefferson residents. Contractors may take building materials there only if they have been removed from a location in Jefferson.
