Children all over Greene County, and many adults, too, are learning about science this summer with their local library’s summer reading program with a theme “Fizz, Boom, Bang!”
In keeping with the “Fizz, Boom, Bang!” theme, the libraries hosted Richard Miles, programs coordinator at the Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines, for interactive programs funded by the Greene County board of supervisors.
In a fast-paced program Miles demonstrated the science of air, the science of sound, the science of pressure, and more. His fun included an air cannon made of a garbage can and a potato gun to show children air pressure. One of the children’s favorite demonstration was of combustion as Miles burned alcohol in a water jug.
The summer reading programs conclude later this month with performances by magician Jonathan May, also funded by the county board of supervisors.
