July starts with puddles

July began in Jefferson with plenty of puddles after more than 3-1/2 inches of rain fell during the last four days of June. Rainfall for the month was a few drops more than 8 inches, according to volunteer weather observer John Beltz.

Fair, horse ringWith the Greene County Fair slated to start next Tuesday, there was plenty of water at the fairgrounds. According to fair board secretary Doug Hawn, the horse show ring and the parking area are the most troublesome locations in times of abundant moisture. “Once the standing water starts to do down, it will go down quickly,” Hawn said Wednesday morning.

The horse show ring is sand. If needed next week, the fair board will bring in more sand, but Hawn said they’ll wait until then to make a decision. He’s hoping it doesn’t rain again for a while, “but that’s something you can’t do anything about so you just manage,” he said.

He added that there have been many times the fairgrounds have been soggier going into Fair Week.

No one is playing in the large puddle playing in the hole dug for the Greene County Medical Center expansion. The first photo was taken June 13. The second photo was taken June 30. The construction crew has spent considerable time pumping out excess groundwater during the course of the project, but now it’s time for dry, sunny weather to dry out the hole enough so that the forms can be placed and concrete can be poured.

Puddle, infieldThere were puddles at Allensworth Field, home of Greene County Ram baseball, as well. These puddles were between second and third base.

Puddle, dugoutRain caused the cancellation of a home game against South Hamilton last Friday and postponement of a home game against Nevada on Monday. Not only was the infield wet, but the visiting team’s dugout wasn’t up for guests.  As of noon Wednesday, a home game vs Gilbert is still “on.”
