The first large project using funds from the physical plant and equipment levy (PPEL) approved by Greene County school district voters last September is underway.
Brockway Mechanical and Roofing of Des Moines is in Jefferson replacing the roof on the west portion of Greene County High School, including the auditorium. Brockway had the low bid of $181,388, about $20,000 lower than the original cost estimate. Brockway has done roof work for Colfax-Mingo and Bondurant-Farrar schools, as well as at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
According to superintendent Tim Christensen, the school will purchase a Chevrolet Suburban out of PPEL funds this summer at an estimated cost of $40,000.
Another project planned for 2016 has been moved forward to this summer. In the process of “moving” 20 classrooms at the elementary school to accommodate the change in attendance centers (all Greene County grades pre-K through third in Jefferson, all Greene County grades 4-6 in Grand Junction), the carpet was in poorer shape than staff realized. Three classrooms will be recarpeted, this time with carpet squares. Stained or ruined portions can be replaced without recarpeting the entire room. Cost estimate on that project is $20,000.
A job folks will notice more than a new roof has already been done at the high school. The “Jefferson-Scranton High School” came off the front of the building and was replaced with “Greene County High School.” The Ram, donated years ago by Bubba and Janie Scheuermann in memory of their son Logan, is still there.
