The Greene County Rams summer teams had good nights Friday. The softball team’s 2-0 victory over PCM put the Rams in a tie for first place in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference, putting the Rams and the PCM Mustangs at 10-2 in the conference. The baseball team’s 4-0 victory over PCM ended an eight game losing streak.
The softball game was called after 5-1/2 innings due to lightning. The game was delayed for about 40 minutes when lightning was first spotted, and then finally called an official game.
Marissa Promes pitched, allowing four hits. She struck out four batters and had no walks. The win put her season record at 12-3.
The Rams’ first run came in the second inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Emma Soddoris drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to bring in Sydney Koch for the first run. Emily Christensen hit a double with one out in the fifth inning. She crossed home plate on a Kayla Mobley single. For the game, Mobley had two singles and Hannah Onken, Koch and Carleigh Paup had one single each.
Greene County is 13-5 overall, with the West Marshall tournament on the schedule for Saturday.
The baseball team took advantage of a day of rest Thursday and came back Friday ready to play. The boys played error-free ball against solid pitching by junior Colton Fitzpatrick to win 4-0. That game was not affected by weather.
Fitzpatrick had seven strikeouts and two walks and he allowed only three hits.
Riah Nelsen hit a solo homerun in the sixth inning. He had two other RBI, for a total of three in the game. Daric Whipple had the other RBI. Alex Rasmussen doubled, and Jordan Challen, JC Weitl, Jordan Hostetler and Tyler Beger all hit singles.
The Rams ended the week at 4-11 overall and 4-8 in the HOIAC. The loss put the PCM Mustangs at 7-7 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
