The spelling bee hosted by the Greene County Historical Society Saturday afternoon at the Greene County Community Center was all about family bragging rights. Four Sloans and a pair of Bardole brothers took home trophies.
Winners were (front, from left) Arthur Bardole, first place and Avery Bardole, second place in grades 5-8, Mia Sloan, first place in grades 3-4, and Adam Sloan, second place and Styles Truong-Harrison, first place in grades 1-2; and (back, from left) Doug Sloan, second place in adults and Adam Orfield, first place in adults, and Jarrett Delp, first place and Rachel Sloan, second place in high school.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee list was used. Words on the adult list proved particularly difficult for the competitors, and pronouncer Andrew McGinn switched back to the high school list in the final part of the competition. Judges for the spelling bee were Shirley Stapleton, Cindi Daubendiek and Jean Van Gilder.
