The Greene County Rams split baseball and softball games Monday in Des Moines vs the Saydel Eagles.
The baseball team lost its sixth consecutive game in the 7-2 game, though coach Mark Sawhill said the team played well. The Eagles stand at 9-1 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference; the Rams are 3-7 in the conference and 3-9 overall.
Sophomore Daric Whipple pitched the entire game. He walked four batters and hit two with pitches. He had no strikeouts.
On the offense, junior Colton Fitzpatrick hit two singles. Junior Alex Rasmussen hit one double and junior JC Weitl and sophomore Tyler Beger each hit one single. Both Ram runs scored on wild pitches.
The story is different for the softball team. The girls won 8-4 vs the Eagles and stand at 9-1 in the HOIAC and 11-4 overall. The Rams have won nine of their last 10 games.
The Rams’ bats were connecting as eight of them had at least one hit. Sophomore Carleigh Paup had a double, two singles, and two RBI, while classmate Sydney Koch had a double, two singles and one RBI. Juniors Tressa Rasmussen, Emily Christensen and Kayla Mobley each had two singles and one RBI Junior Emma Saddoris had a base hit and one RBI and junior Bailey Godwin hit a double. Junior Hannah Onken singled and junior Marissa Promes had one RBI.
Promes pitched the entire game. She had eight strikeouts and two walks. She allowed four earned runs on six hits.
