The Greene County Historical Society invites all to join in the fun and celebrate the Saturday of the Bell Tower Festival, June 14. That’s Flag Day, too, and flag celebrations abound.
Greene County Historical Society members and a crew of volunteers will honor our “Grand Old Flag” as they march in the parade with a 20 x 30 foot American flag, on loan for the occasion from Kum & Go Corporate offices.
It’s the 35th birthday of the Festival, and it’s the 200th birthday of the Star Spangled Banner, too. At 3 pm, the Mahanay Bell Tower will play the National Anthem and all are invited to join in singing along as the county participates in the Anthem Across America. The event is nationwide singing of the Anthem, which was written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key as the flag flew over Fort McHenry, during the Battle of Baltimore.
Back at the Museum, a collection of flags will be on display to add to the Flag Day festivities. Museum volunteer Mikki Schwartzkopf has researched the history of the United States flags that are on display, including ones with 45, 48 and 50 stars, as well as the earlier Betsy Ross design and the 1976 Bicentennial flag.
And of course, visitors are invited to view all the other displays and artifacts at the Museum, as well as the annual Bell Tower Festival Art Show, featuring local Greene County artists and those with a Greene County connection.
The museum and art show are free and open to the public Friday from 8 to 9 pm, Saturday from 1 to 9 pm, and Sunday from 1 to 4 pm. More information about the museum is available on Facebook.
