After talks about costs for signage for Home Base Iowa that ranged from $276 to $4,000 or so, the signs have been ordered, county engineer Wade Weiss told the county board of supervisors Monday. Weiss ordered 24 signs at a cost of $45 each, for a total of $1,080. He said he asked the Department of Transportation to rush the order.
Seven of the signs will be posted by the DOT on Highways 4, 25, 30 and 144 as they enter the county. Fourteen of the signs will be posted by the county secondary roads crew on county road. Weiss ordered three extra signs to have on hand for future needs. The signs will be posted on existing sign posts, greatly reducing the cost.
The original $276 cost was Greene County Development Corp executive director Ken Paxton’s first request to the county. That was for six signs – one for each county town – and did not include posts. After discussion, the supervisors came up with the much larger figure, suggesting signs entering county towns from at least two directions, signs on roads entering the county, and posts.
Greene County is designated as the first community/county in Gov Branstad’s new Home Base Iowa initiative to draw military veterans to live and work in the state. The designation does not include any additional state funding.
