Nurses at Greene County Medical Center are being honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the superhuman tasks nurses perform each day.
Nomination forms are available at the main desk and the outpatient reception desk – and anyone can nominate a medical center nurse for this award. Twice each year, a nurse will be selected at Greene County Medical Center to receive the DAISY Award. The honoree will receive a certificate commending him or her for being an “Extraordinary Nurse” and a sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch,” hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa. Cinnabon® cinnamon rolls, a favorite of Barnes’s, will also be served to the award recipient and everyone in their department.
Chief nursing executive Katie Heldt said, “We are proud to be among the hospitals participating in the DAISY Award program. Nurses are heroes every day. Given the rapidly changing health care environment and the important role our nurses play in patient care coordination, the DAISY Foundation will assist us in recognizing nurses for the valuable work they perform every day.”
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Allen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
