There’s a small group of women having a party at Clover Hall this week. They might at odd times look like they’re working, but don’t be fooled. They’re having fun.
Judy Larson (left) and Fereleen Acton (right), co-chairs of the Greene County Medical Center auxiliary’s annual garage sale, along with Gladys Taylor, Jo Ann Comstock (next to Larson) and Dianne Blackmer (next to Acton) are spending their days this week receiving donations and arranging the sale. They say they’re providing a service. “We help people get rid of their extra stuff. Someone’s stuff is someone else’s treasure,” Larson said Monday at Clover Hall.
Other auxiliary members, and even a few husbands, will spend time during set up and work shifts during the sale. All together, about 25 members help with the sale, for a total of between 300 and 400 volunteer hours. The sale usually raises $2,500 or so for the auxiliary, all of which is given to the medical center for equipment purchases.
“We have a ball. It’s work, but it’s fun,” Larson said about the set up days. “We just like working together.”
She has been known to model hats that have been donated, and they often “check out” toys before they set them out for sale. They’re not above wearing donated feathers in their hair. There is a reason for the “play.” The women take home donated items that might sell more easily after a good wash, and bring them back cleaner and ready for sale.
Items for the garage sale can be dropped off at Clover Hall Tuesday or Wednesday between 9 am and 6 pm. The auxiliary cannot accept donations of televisions, appliances or computer items, but most other things are welcome and will be gratefully accepted.
The sale begins with a Sneak Peak Thursday from 5 to 7 pm. There is a $3 entry fee to be among those early shoppers. The sale continues Friday from 9 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 9 to 11 am. There is no entry fee Friday or Saturday, and shoppers can fill a bag for one low price Saturday.
Saturday shoppers can also take advantage of the Master Gardeners annual plant sale from 9:30 to 11 am at the commercial building just north of Clover Hall.
