A group of 10 Greene County High School students and staff attended the Iowa Safe Schools conference Tuesday, April 22, in Des Moines. The conference was open to schools that have received grants in the Iowa Safe and Supportive Schools (IS3) program.
The goal of the IS3 program is to create safe and supportive learning environments for all students, with a focus on ending bullying, harassment and discrimination.
Emily Gannon works with the program. She, Chad Morton and Kyle Kinne were the staff members who attended, along with students Gabe Bardole, Cody Hidlebaugh, Dylan Lansman, Zach Sukovaty, Taylor Hardin, Cheli Stroburg and Noah Luther.
IS3 provides funds for student activities and student-directed school improvements. This year, the IS3 team decided to update the school’s media center. In past years, the media center has been used as a computer lab. With all students having Chromebooks this year, many computers were taken out of the library, freeing up space. The IS3 team worked to make the library an inviting, comfortable place, with plenty of space to gather and read.
Students from each grant-funded school gave presentations about how the grant funds have been used. Senior Kasia Johnson, with help from art teacher Diane Kunzler, prepared a video tour of the building for the presentation. See the video here:
