VFW Post 9599 has moved its collection box for torn and tattered flags to the alley behind the post at 109 N. Chestnut St in Jefferson.
Post Commander Don Ihnken said that over the course of a year, the VFW post goes through the prescribed burning of hundreds of flags. Occasionally a flag that is still in pretty good shape is put in the collection box. Those are donated to the Boy Scouts. The post also sometimes provides flags to scouts working on merit badges that require them to burn flags correctly, Ihnken said.
Most, though are burned in a small ceremony by post officers or by the entire post.
Ihnken also reports a set back in the renovation of the post caused by a leaking roof. The building is still not usable for the public.
Finally, watch for details of a raffle of Shamrock, the oversized plush horse donated to the post last month by Wells Fargo Bank of Jefferson.
