Greene County Republicans and Democrats alike will have reason to vote in the June 3 primary election.
Locally, the only contested race is the candidacy for county treasurer on the Republican ticket. Phyllis A. Drake and Kristi Holz are both seeking the opportunity to run against incumbent Democrat Donna Lawson for that office.
Come November, there will be three contests. For the county board of supervisors, incumbent Republican Dawn Rudolph will be challenged by Democrat Kevin Fitzpatrick Sr for the District 2 seat, and incumbent Republican Tom Contner will be challenged by Democrat Randy Monthei for the District 3 seat.
Incumbent county treasurer Democrat Donna Lawson will face either Drake or Holz.
County attorney Nicola J. Martino, a Republican, is running unopposed. County recorder Maria Tasler, a Democrat, is also running unopposed. The offices of auditor and sheriff are not up for re-election.
Democrats voting in the primary will select a candidate to run against Republican incumbent Chip Baltimore of Boone for the House District 47 seat. Democratic candidates are Hans Erickson of Boone and Mark J. Trueblood of Ogden.
Republicans voting in the primary will choose (along with a county treasurer candidate) a candidate to run for the US Senate seat now held by Democrat Tom Harkin, who is not running for re-election. Candidates are Sam Clovis of Hinton, Joni Ernst of Red Oak, Mark Jacobs of West Des Moines, Scott Schaben of Ames and Matt Whitaker of Clive.
Bruce Braley of Waterloo is the only Democratic candidate for the seat.
Also, Republican Tom Hoefling of Lohrville is taking on Gov Terry Branstad in a primary race for that office. Jack Hatch of Des Moines is the only Democrat on the primary ballot for governor.
