Staff at the Churdan public library is kicking off National Library Week (April 13-19) with a trip back in time to the American Civil War.
The interactive program is planned for Sunday, April 13, at the library and the community room. The evening begins at 5 pm with a program featuring a variety of information and hands-on activities.
Participants will being at the front door of the library with a trip on the Underground Railroad. Upon reaching the destination, participants will be given a name for the rest of the evening. Some will be Union soldiers and some will be Confederate soldiers. All will be called to the dining hall at 6 pm for a last meal before heading off to war. A free will donation for the meal is optional.
During the meal, stories of Iowa Civil War soldiers will be told by Ron Toliver, whose ancestor fought for the North, and Bill Burkett, whose ancestor fought for the South. After the meal, participants will learn if the person’s name they were given for the evening returned from the war or died as a soldier.
All are welcome. The event is sponsored in part by the citizens of Churdan and through a Communities 4 Children and Community Partnerships for Protecting Children Neighborhood/Community Network mini grant.
