The Greene County Historical Society featured the storytelling of retired newspaper publisher Rick Morain at its first meeting of the year April 4 in Cooper. The Society’s theme this year is “Telling our stories.”

Morain, an accomplished and entertaining pianist, opened his talk like this.

Morain spoke of the tribal tradition of storytelling to accurately preserve history over generations. “Today, groups like yours, the Greene County Historical Society, play that role. Newspapers and journalists provide some of that raw data that goes into the ‘tribal lore,’ but historical societies are the vestal virgins. You’re the ones that keep the lamp going, and I think it’s very important. I think this is a tremendous topic for you to take on starting this year,” Morain said about the group’s “Growing Up Greene!” project that will preserve stories of growing up in Greene County.

Morain encouraged everyone there to take the time to preserve their own stories as audio or video recordings. He then told a few stories of his own.
