Oh, the weather!

DSCN1556The winter of 2013-14 seems to be like a famous bunny that just keeps going, and going, and going, with the first day of March one of the most wintry days yet. The high temperature in Jefferson, according to KCCI SchoolNet weather data was only 17, and the low temperature was -2 degrees. SchoolNet didn’t report the snow, which very unofficially had to be six inches or so.

But here’s what we hope Mother Nature doesn’t repeat with us, and what we wish she would bless us with…

According to National Weather Service data, the coldest day in March in Des Moines since 1879 was March 1, 1962, with a low temperature of -22 degrees. On March 10, 1948, the high temperature was 2 degrees. Please, Mother Nature, let bygones be bygones.

The warmest day in March since 1879 was March 29, 1986. Maybe some of you remember the day…it was 91 degrees in Des Moines. Perhaps we can look forward to that for the end of March.

For folks who don’t like to be greedy, who are longing just not to be cold…every March since 1879  has had at least one day with a high temperature of 50 degrees or warmer. Almost all Marches, 123 of them, have had at least one day with a temperature of 60 degrees or better. And for those waiting to go outdoors wearing short sleeves and no jacket, 90 Marches, 69 percent, have had at least one day when the thermometer hit 70 degrees.

Spring will come! It always has!
