Adopt-a-Family board reports a successful 2013

With the help of a generous community, the Adopt-a-Family board reports that 2013 was again a successful year in their efforts to support Greene County residents in need.

The Holiday Food Basket program provided more than $16,000 in food and household goods for 160 families on Dec. 21. Food items included meat, fresh produce, canned goods, milk, bread, and ingredients for other nutritious meals. Families also received laundry detergent, cleaning products, and personal hygiene items.

GCAAF was again able to use the cooperative buying power of the SHARE program through New Opportunities, the local Fareway store, and donation drives held by several area churches to make this project a success. Several organizations helped with sorting and distributing food, including Hardin Happy Hustlers 4-H Club, Greene County High School National Honor Society, St. Brigid Catholic Church youth, and a group of local Cyclone fans.

Operation Warm Hearts provided winter coats, boots, snow pants, and other cold weather necessities for 91 children from 41 families. Last August, School Supplies for Kids served 190 youth from 71 families. GCAAF continues to provide for the Homeless Youth program through Greene County High School.

“None of this is possible without the giving hearts of Greene County, and we cannot thank you enough,” said board spokesperson Laura Ballard. “On behalf of Adopt-a-Family, Greene County Christian Action Resource Center, and the Greene County Ministerial Association, please accept our heartfelt gratitude, and that of the community members whose burden was lightened by your generosity.”
