Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:
Friday, Feb. 28: At 11:49 am a deputy spoke with a rural resident in the 100 block of County Road E-39 (210th St) in Kendrick Township about receiving harassing phone calls.
Thursday, Feb. 27: At 10:25 am a deputy was advised that a semi-tractor trailer had damaged the Union Pacific railroad gate crossing on Highway 144 just south of Paton. The semi was not located; UP was advised of the minor damage. At 3:21 pm a deputy was advised of a reported possible intoxicated driver that had left Jefferson and was heading west on Highway 30. Carroll County was advised of the driver as the deputy was on another call at the time and was out of position. At 4:30 pm a deputy investigated the report of a driver deliberately swerving towards another oncoming vehicle on Highway 30 near H Ave east of Scranton.
Wednesday, Feb. 26: At 1:56 pm two deputies, the Grand Junction fire and rescue squad and the Rippey fire department were dispatched to a one vehicle rollover accident that occurred on 310th St at U Ave in Washington Township. April Janeen Hopkins, 34, of Rippey was northbound on U Ave when she lost control of her vehicle due to ice patches on the roadway. Her vehicle slid into the ditch and came to rest on the driver’s side. Hopkins and two young children in the vehicle were not injured but were evaluated by Grand Junction EMS responders. Damage to Hopkins’ 2005 Dodge Stratus was estimated at $8,000.
Tuesday, Feb. 25: At 9:51 am the Greene County sheriff’s office, fire departments from Scranton, Jefferson and Grand Junction, and Greene County EMS personnel were dispatched to a structure fire at 1631 E Ave (Highway 25) south of Scranton. A machine shed owned by Craig Peterson of that address was a total loss, along with a pickup truck, farm tractor, planter, cultivator and approximately 10 breeding ewes and 20 lambs. The first deputies at the scene were able to get 12 to 15 head of sheep away from the burning structure. At 10:48 am a deputy was advised of a backing accident that occurred at the post office in Grand Junction. Both parties had left the scene. The deputy advised them to pick up accident report forms at the LEC. At 11:55 pm a deputy was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction for a reported verbal domestic altercation. After an investigation of all persons present at the residence, the deputy arrested Amanda Lynn Mehalovich, 34, of Des Moines on an outstanding Polk County warrant for a probation violation*. The deputy also arrested Jason Lee Lippart, 34, of Des Moines on an outstanding Urbandale police department warrant for possession of drug paraphernalia*. Lippart was released to the Urbandale PD. Mahalovich was held at the Greene County jail.
Monday, Feb. 24: At 7:19 am a deputy and the Grand Junction fire and rescue department were dispatched to a reported pickup truck fire in the 1200 block of W Ave in Junction Township. A 2001 Chevrolet K2500 owned by Mark Stoline was reported to be a total loss. The cause of the fire is not known at this time. At 8:18 am a deputy checked a vehicle that was reportedly in the ditch on Highway 144 near the Greene/Boone County line south of Rippey for more than 24 hours. The deputy arranged for its removal. At 12:11 pm a deputy spoke with a Farlin resident about a phone scam involving a request for personal information so the resident could win a substantial amount of money.
Sunday, Feb. 23: At 12:46 pm a deputy was asked to retrieve a dog running at large n the 300 block of S. 13th St. in Grand Junction. The black and white hunting-type dog dragging a leash was taken to the animal shelter in Jefferson. At 10:22 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 900 block of Main St in Scranton for the report of criminal mischief to car windows. A known male allegedly damaged the vehicle. An investigation is ongoing with possible charges pending.

Friday, Feb. 21: At 11:32 am deputies and JPD officers located a rural Jefferson man for whom there was a mental health committal order parked outside the Jefferson Public Library. The man had previously made threats toward police officers, the President, and other businesses and individuals. The subject was transported to Greene County Medical Center for a preliminary evaluation and then to the state mental health facility in Cherokee.
Thursday, Feb. 20: At 11:12 am a deputy reported he slid on the snow- and ice-covered roadway striking and knocking down a stop sign as he attempted to turn onto N. Vine St from W. Washington St in Jefferson. The city street department was advised of the downed sign. At 1:03 pm a deputy investigated a reported theft of a new Android tablet from a residence in the 900 block of Main St. East in Grand Junction. At 1:42 pm a deputy was advised of a large branch blocking the roadway on County Road E-57 near the Raccoon River bridge and S Ave in Franklin Township. The secondary roads department was advised of the situation. At 1:44 pm the chief deputy assisted a motorist after her car slid into the ditch on Highway 30 near Pioneer Ave east of Jefferson. At 2:09 pm the chief deputy checked a reported vehicle off the roadway at 100th St and S Ave in Paton Township. At 2:33 pm a deputy checked a vehicle that had entered the ditch on Highway 30 just east of D Ave west of Scranton. At 3:59 pm a deputy spoke with a resident in the 800 block of E Hager St in Grand Junction about someone in California using his Social Security number to receive fraudulent federal tax returns. The deputy advised that he contact the Social Security Administration about the tax issue. At 4:33 pm a deputy was advised of a semi tractor-trailer having mechanical problems on the roadway in the 1800 block of Highway 30 east of Jefferson. The semi was able to continue westbound at a slow rate of speed to Sparky’s One Stop as the deputy followed. At 4:35 pm the chief deputy was dispatched to the 600 block of S. 11th St in Grand Junction for the report of 4-wheel ATVs being driven on the roadway. The deputy advised the riders that the ATVs would be impounded of the sheriff’s office is called back. At 8:38 pm a deputy responded for possible assistance for JPD officers as they responded to a reported domestic altercation that was physical and with weapons reported to be at the residence in the 500 block of W. State St in Jefferson. The situation was handled without incident by the police officers.
Wednesday, Feb. 19: At 3:02 am dispatchers received a call from a resident in the 1600 block of M Ave in Bristol Township stating a male subject had knocked on the door needing a ride. The resident did not comply. A deputy responded and located a vehicle in the ditch nearby. The owner was not located at that time. The vehicle was towed to a secure facility. The accident is under investigation. At 10:40 am a deputy was advised of cattle on the roadway at County Road P-33 and 195th St in Junction Township. The owner was notified. At 10:48 pm a deputy was asked to look for several pieces of steel rebar that were reported to have fallen from a semi tractor-trailer east of Jefferson on Highway 30. The steel rebar was reported near the traveled portion of the roadway. The deputy was not able to locate the material described.
Tuesday, Feb. 18: At 12:58 am a deputy was dispatched to a residence in the 1100 block of State St in Scranton for the report of several unknown youth tapping on the windows and harassing the residents at that location. The deputy was unable to locate anyone on foot or in the vicinity of that residence. At 9:08 am a deputy investigated criminal mischief to the wooden barricades near the sledding hill at Hyde Park. It appears a motorized vehicle struck the barricade, leaving various car parts at the scene. At 2:18 pm JPD officers and deputies removed eight to 10 small hay bales from the roadway starting at the Union Pacific overpass north on Highway 4 to about 190th St. The bales had fallen off a southbound truck. At 7:57 pm a deputy was dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction for the report of a possible burglary and criminal mischief to a door at that residence.
Monday, Feb. 17: At 4:35 am a deputy checked the report of a vehicle that had slid off the roadway on Highway 30 near Highway 25 at Scranton. The two occupants in the vehicle were not injured nor did the vehicle sustain any damage. At 1:42 pm the Jefferson fire department was dispatched to a controlled burn that was out of control in the 1200 block of Orchard Ave in Hardin Township. At 2:50 pm a deputy was advised of cattle on the roadway on Highway 144 between Dana and Grand Junction. The owner was notified and on the scene upon the deputy’s arrival. At 2:53 pm a deputy investigated an online computer money fraud scam for a resident in the 1400 block of Kirkwood Ave in Jackson Township.
Sunday, Feb. 16: At 5:43 pm two deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 200 block of Lawrence St in Dana for the report of a handgun being discharged in the front yard of the residence. After the deputy’s initial investigation it was determined it was a domestic altercation between a male and female residing there and that a 9 mm handgun was discharged into the air after the argument. Subsequently arrested at the scene was Nathan Allen Zollars, 32, of Dana.* He was charged with domestic abuse assault- class D felony and reckless use of a firearm- simple misdemeanor.
Saturday, Feb. 15: At 2:07 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 500 block of Main St in Grand Junction for the report of several 4-wheel ATVs being operated on the city streets. The deputy advised the riders that citations will be issued if it is reported again.
Friday, Feb. 14: At 6:27 am a deputy was advised that a vehicle had struck a bridge guard rail and sustained damage on Highway 144 near 100th St in Paton Township. The caller said he was southbound when blowing snow created by a semi-trailer tractor obscured his vision and he struck the bridge. The driver continued on to work but called the LEC. At 8:27 am a deputy was dispatched to a one vehicle accident that occurred on the Highway 144 diagonal just southeast of Rippey. Silva Guerrero, 19, of Perry was northbound when he lost control of his vehicle due to slick snow and slush on the roadway. He entered the west ditch. Guerrero was not injured. He was cited for failure to maintain control, failure to prove security against liability, improper use of registration and operating a non-registered vehicle. Damage to his 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse was estimated at $3,500.
Thursday, Feb. 13: At 4:26 am a driver reported at the LEC she had struck a deer on Highway 30 at Orchard Ave east of Jefferson.
Wednesday, Feb. 12: At 7:59 am a deputy checked a vehicle that had slid into the ditch on Highway 144 just north of Highway 30 at Grand Junction. There was no damage to the vehicle and no injuries.
Tuesday, Feb. 11: At 3:20 pm a deputy was advised of the theft of lumber from a building site in Scranton. The theft is under investigation. At 4:06 pm the sheriff’s office assisted the JPD in looking for a missing 6-year-old boy.
Monday, Feb. 10: Routine activity reported.
Sunday, Feb. 9: At 4:39 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 1600 block of T Ave in Junction Township for the report of an attempted burglary at a farm building site. Entry was not gained but the deputy was able to photograph tire track prints at the scene.
Saturday, Feb. 8: At 7:53 am a deputy was advised of a vehicle that had slid into the ditch on Highway 30 west of Jefferson near the Raccoon River bridge east of County Road P-14. The three occupants were not injured and the vehicle was not damaged. At 1:37 pm a deputy was dispatched to a two vehicle accident that had occurred in the 500 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction. Rebecca Lynn Chumbley of Grand Junction attempted to turn into the parking lot at Casey’s General Store but was struck by Lauri Ann Workman, also of Grand Junction. Workman was pulling out of the parking lot and was unable to stop due to slick road conditions. Grand Junction fire and rescue was dispatched to evaluate both drivers. Workman was cited for failure to yield upon entering a through highway. Chumbley was cited for operating a motor vehicle without registration (expired plates). Damage estimates for the vehicles were not given. At 1:38 pm a deputy investigated a reported burglary and theft of personal property from a residence in the 300 block of 19th St in Grand Junction. At 4:29 pm a deputy was advised of a four-wheeler ATV being driven on the city streets in Grand Junction. The deputy located the owner of the ATV and advised him of the consequences of riding on city property. At 7:28 pm a deputy was asked to check a reported possible forced entry to a residence in the 1000 block of State St in Scranton. The owner was at the residence when the deputy arrived and indicated everything was in order.
Friday, Feb. 7: At 3:53 pm a deputy was advised of an erratic and careless driver entering Greene County from Guthrie County on Highway 4. The deputy was on another call and the vehicle was stopped by a JPD officer as it entered Jefferson. At 3:58 pm a deputy checked a reported vehicle in the ditch just south of the Raccoon River bridge on Highway 4. The driver reported the vehicle slid off the roadway due to icy road conditions. The driver was not injured and the vehicle sustained no damage.
Thursday, Feb. 6: At 7:52 am the chief deputy sheriff responded to a minor two vehicle accident in Paton. Madison Jo Stauffer, 18, of Paton was westbound on Tallman. Christopher Derry, 28, of Paton was northbound on Park St. Derry failed to stop as posted and struck Stauffer’s vehicle. There were no injuries. Derry was cited for failure to obey a stop sign. Damage to his 2011 Dodge Caravan was estimated at $1,500. Damage to Stauffer’s 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser was estimated at $1,500.
Wednesday, Feb. 5: At 8:03 am two deputies, the chief deputy and K-9 Leo were dispatched to Sparky’s One Stop in Rippey for the report of two suspicious males loitering near and inside the station. After an initial investigation it was determined that there was an outstanding Dallas County warrant for one of the males. Anthony David Rothmeyer, 44, of Grand Junction was subsequently arrested on the warrant. Rothmeyer was a passenger in a car driven by Mathew James Kilts of Perry. After an extensive search of Kilts’ vehicle by the K-9 an deputies, Rothmeyer was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of methamphetamine.* He was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.* After a search of the restroom at Sparky’s by the K-9, an arrest warrant was issued for Kilts for possession of marijuana. Rothmeyer is being held at the LEC. At 4:20 pm two deputies assisted the Iowa State Patrol with traffic control at a two vehicle accident that occurred just inside Carroll County.

Monday, Feb. 3: At 5:52 pm a deputy investigated to determine the driver of a vehicle that was reported to have passed a school bus while its lights were activated.

Saturday, Feb. 1: At 1:04 am a deputy was dispatched to 209 Main in Paton for a reported fight in progress. The deputy subsequently arrested Fredrick James Selleck, 27, of Gowrie for trespass and public intoxication.*
