An upcoming workshop on helping kids to develop early reading skills and learn healthy eating habits is being sponsored by Greene County Extension for child care providers, teachers, as well as parents. The workshop is eligible for two hours of licensing credits for child care providers.
The workshop, scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, is titled “Linking Food with Literacy.” Participants will find out how to introduce literacy skills to young children by reading about and exploring new foods and tastes. The session will include seven reading strategies that model integrated learning, how to create learning objectives with sample children’s books, and design taste testing opportunities to introduce new foods to children. A total of eight well-loved books and food-related activities will be covered. Registration is due by Feb. 26 for this workshop.
“Early childhood literacy and nutrition are both very important topics for anybody who works with children,” said Michael Cooley, county Extension coordinator for Greene County Extension. “We’re thrilled to offer local courses to enhance our county’s child care services, as well as classrooms and families. The workshop isn’t just for child care providers. Parents and teachers are more than welcome to attend, and I think they’ll be really happy with what they take away.”
Registration is only $10, which will be used to off-set direct expenses and to support the Families County Extension program.
