The Relay for Life of Greene County will introduce a new event as part of the activities slated for April 26.
A Color Out Cancer 5K run/walk will follow the route used for the Bell Tower Festival’s Ding Dong Dash. Checkpoints along the course will feature five different color stations, each representing a different type of cancer. At each station, volunteers will blast the T-shirts of participants with a colorful powder. Participants in the non-competitive walk/run will cross the finish line wearing a T-shirt bursting with a rainbow of color while gaining awareness of different cancers.
Although the event is not officially timed, it will serve as a warm-up activity for those preparing for events like the Market to Market relay in May or the Ding Dong Dash in June.
Check-in and same-day registration for the Color Out Cancer event will begin at 9:30 am. All participants will be given a white T-shirt, along with a meal ticket for the noon lunch and other goodies.
The traditional Survivor Walk will take place at 10:20, with the 5K runners and walkers beginning the course at 10:30.
Organizers encourage participants to register early. The fee on or before April 1 is $20 for ages 13 and older or $10 for those 12 and younger. The fee increases $5 on April 2. Participants who register after April 1 will not be guaranteed a T-shirt.
Registration materials are available at the Greene County Community Center and at local libraries. Completed forms can be dropped off or mailed to the Community Center at 204 W. Harrison St, Jefferson, IA 50129. Checks for the registration fee should be made payable to American Cancer Society.
