This winter’s Boone and Greene County Crop Fair is designed to help local growers achieve a more profitable operation. The program will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Odgen Community Center, 114 Southwest 8th Street in Ogden. The free program runs from 9 am to 12 pm with complimentary lunch served at noon. Reservations are requested by Feb.14.
The fair is being jointly coordinated by Greene and Boone County Extension, with sponsorship by the Iowa Corn Growers Association and Iowa Corn Promotion Board, as well as Crop Production Services of Boone.
Featured presentations include “Identifying and controlling Palmer Amaranth and Close Relative” by Bob Hartzler, weed specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach; “Weather Outlook” by Craig Johnson, executive director of the Iowa Academy of Science; and “Market Outlook” by Dan Greder and Steve Reece of Sciota Trading.
“We’re excited to be able to partner with our sponsors to bring in some top-notch experts to speak about topics that will really help crop producers in 2014,” said Michael Cooley, county Extension coordinator for Greene County Extension. “Growers are always interested in the latest outlook on weather and the markets. Plus, we really want producers to learn more about the extremely invasive Palmer amaranth, which has now been confirmed in five Iowa counties.”
