Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:
Friday, Jan. 31: At 10:38 am a deputy investigated a possible harassment case in Rippey.
Thursday, Jan. 30: At 11:05 am a deputy spoke with a Scranton resident about a letter she had received thanking her for a generous contribution to an organization that she had not authorized nor did in fact send. The deputy advised that she check with her bank and monitor her checking account. At 4:15 pm a deputy investigated a reported school bus passing violation in the 1800 block of County Road E-18 in Dawson Township. The deputy planned to speak to the owner of the vehicle.
Wednesday, Jan. 29: At 11:55 am a deputy responded to a structure fire at a livestock hoop building at 2209 230th St south of Grand Junction. The structure is owned by Jeff Gilley. The structure sustained major damage with the loss of approximately 22 sheep and goats. Fire units from Grand Junction, Paton, Ogden and Jefferson responded. At 3:08 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department in questioning a Grand Junction resident about a possible assault that had occurred in Jefferson. At 10:10 pm a deputy assisted the Calhoun County sheriff’s office with trying to locate the whereabouts or address of a male who was last reported to live in Scranton.
Tuesday, Jan. 28: At 12:12 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department with a male and female subject creating a disturbance at Sparky’s One Stop on Highway 30 in Jefferson. See the News page or use the search tool (enter Boudewyn or Lampe) for details. At 4:53 pm deputies were dispatched to a structure fire at 508 S. 11th St in Grand Junction. The fire was reported to have started in the garage and spread to the house. The house, which is owned by Keisha Marie Kopecky, sustained major damage to the roof, as well as smoke and water damage throughout. The garage and two vehicles inside it were estimated to be a total loss. Siding on a neighboring garage owned by Davy Cooklin was also damaged. Greene County EMS and the Grand Junction, Jefferson and Churdan fire departments responded. At 5:17 pm while serving civil papers at a residence in the 200 block of 175th St in Kendrick Township a deputy arrested Cordilla Kay Lorentzen of Scranton on an outstanding arrest warrant from the Perry police department.
Monday, Jan. 27: At 6:14 am a deputy assisted in transporting an injured red tail hawk from the 1000 block of Main St in Grand Junction to meet a raptor specialist in Bayard to begin rehabilitation for the hawk. Sunday, Jan. 26: At 3:59 pm a deputy investigated a reported burglary and possible theft of property from a machine shed in the 1100 block of R Ave in Hardin Township. At 5:50 pm a deputy was dispatched to 340th St near Quest Ave in Franklin Township for the report of a burglary to a machine shed. The owner is not sure if anything was taken from the shed.

Thursday, Jan. 23: At 4:05 pm a deputy investigated a burglary and theft of several items from a farm building site in the 1500 block of Highway 144 in Junction Township.
Wednesday, Jan. 22: Routine activity reported.
Tuesday, Jan. 21: At 8:13 am a deputy spoke with an out-of-county resident about the unauthorized use of his pickup truck by a Greene County resident. The pickup was reported to have been used without the owner’s consent.
Monday, Jan. 20: At 5:10 pm a deputy, the Jefferson fire department, Scranton fire and rescue and Greene County EMS personnel were dispatched for a reported two vehicle hit and run accident that occurred on Highway 25 south of Scranton near 250th St. Victoria Ann McCool of Ogden was northbound on Highway 25 when a 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck being driven by Michael Joseph Hofbauer of Coon Rapids reportedly drove out of the ditch and onto the roadway, striking McCool’s 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix. Hofbauer drove away from the scene of the accident and was later located driving to a residence in Jefferson. Hofbauer was subsequently arrested and charged by a JPD officer for OWI-first offense and serious injury by a motor vehicle.* The Jefferson fire department was needed to extract McCool from her vehicle at the scene. She was transported by Greene County EMS to Greene County Medical Center for medical treatment. McCool’s vehicle was estimated to be a total loss. No damage estimate was available for Hofbauer’s vehicle. At 8:32 pm dispatchers were advised by Union Pacific railroad personnel that due to an eight car derailment just west of J Ave, heavy equipment will be brought in on County Road P-14 and Jordan Ave.
Sunday, Jan. 19: At 12:36 am a deputy assisted the Carroll County sheriff’s office in determining the identity of a Greene County resident who was killed in an automobile accident in Carroll County. At 9:48 am dispatchers at the LEC were advised of a stop sign that was knocked down on Highway 144 at the intersection with County Road E-18 at Dana. The Department of Transportation was notified. At 3:55 pm a deputy investigated a reported burglary and theft from a residence in the 500 block of Main St in Grand Junction.
Saturday, Jan. 18: At 1:56 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department with a reported fight and domestic assault in progress in the 400 block of N. Pinet St. At 5:43 pm a deputy assisted an Iowa State Patrol trooper and a Carroll County sheriff deputy with an arrest of a male subject in Ralston.
Friday, Jan. 17: At 7:14 am a deputy was dispatched to a two vehicle accident on Highway 4 north of Churdan. Connie Lee Velder of Churdan was northbound on Highway 4 and was stopped for a school bus. Matthew David Craft of Rockwell City was also northbound. He was unable to stop and struck the rear of Velder’s vehicle. Velder’s vehicle entered the west ditch and Kraft’s vehicle entered the east ditch. Velder was transported to Greene County Medical Center by Churdan fire and rescue with reported back and neck injuries. Kraft was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to his 2005 Nissan Altima was estimated at greater than value. Damage to Velder’s 2008 Toyota Corolla was estimated at $6,500. At 10:33 am a deputy was dispatched to the 2100 block of 340th Ave. in Washington Township for a reported burglary and theft of farm tools, a cutting torch, an air compressor and a welder from a machine shed shop. The deputy is investigating forced entry into the building. At 3:37 pm a deputy was advised of careless driving and possible drag racing on Elizabeth St in Grand Junction. The deputy located and spoke with the young driver of the truck at his home in the 200 block of Hager St East. The driver was informed that a citation would be issued for a violation that had occurred earlier in the day and witnessed by an off duty deputy.
Thursday, Jan. 16: At 2:40 pm two deputies investigated a one vehicle roll over accident at the intersection of Highway 25 and 30 at the north edge of Scranton. Ashley Marie Voege of Jefferson was westbound on Highway 30 when she lost control of her vehicle due to snow covered roads. She entered the south ditch and her vehicle rolled over. She was transported by private vehicle to Greene County Medical Center for medical attention. Her 1998 Ford Explorer was determined to be a total loss. At 4:03 pm three sheriff’s deputies, Greene County EMS, Grand Junction fire and rescue and the Jefferson fire department responded to a two vehicle personal injury accident on Highway 30 at County Road P-33 west of Grand Junction. Alejandro Silva, 34, of Dodge City, KS, was westbound when he lost control of his vehicle due to snow and blowing snow. He slid into the eastbound lane, striking a vehicle driven by Jennifer Lynn Sills, 39, of Ames. Both drivers and a passenger in Silva’s vehicle were transported to Greene County Medical Center for medical attention. Silva was cited for failure to maintain control. His 2001 Ford F150 pickup truck and Sills’ 2011 Toyota Rav 4 were estimated to be total losses. At 4:09 pm sheriff Steve Haupert responded to an accident that occurred on County Road N-63 just west of C Ave in Willow Township. Jonathan Edward Heydon of Coon Rapids was eastbound on N-63 when his vehicle was struck from behind by Zachary David Smith of Scranton. Snow and blowing snow were noted as contributing factors. There were no injuries and both vehicles were able to be driven from the scene. Damage to Heydon’s 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was estimated at $10,000. Damage to Smith’s 2006 Ford F150 pickup truck was estimated at $15,000. Charges are pending further investigation. At 4:56 pm a deputy checked the report of an unoccupied vehicle in the ditch on County Road E-53 just east of Q Ave east of Jefferson. The owner was contacted and reported the vehicle would be removed Friday. At 5 pm a deputy checked an occupied vehicle in the ditch on Highway 30 just west of R Ave, about one mile from the accident an hour earlier. The driver said he was attempting to slow for the vehicle in front of him and slid into the ditch. The driver was not injured and his car was not damaged. A deputy was dispatched to an accident on private property in the 400 block of Lincoln St in Scranton at 5:37 pm. The report did not indicate if the collision was accident-related. According to the report, Linda Gustoff of Scranton attempted to back out of a residential driveway and struck a vehicle driven by Jeannie Gustoff, also of Scranton. Linda Gustoff’s 2002 Chevrolet Venture was estimated to be a total loss. Damage to Jeannie Gustoff’s 1994 Chevrolet S-10 pickup was estimated at $1,500. At 7:41 pm two deputies and the chief deputy were dispatched to a reported assault occurring in the 500 block of 12th St in Grand Junction. After an investigation a deputy arrested Kurtis Langfitt of Dana for assault and issued an arrest warrant for Nevin Wesley Reed of Grand Junction for assault.*
Wednesday, Jan. 15: At 2:56 pm a deputy and the Grand Junction fire department were dispatched to a skid loader fire at T Ave and 200th St in Junction Township. It was reported the skid loader came too close to a brush fire and sustained minimal damage. At 4:22 pm a deputy was asked to assist a Greene County resident in recovering a gun that was loaned to another male. At 7:08 pm a deputy was dispatched and is investigating an attempted burglary at a farm building site in the 2100 block of 340th St in Washington Township.
Tuesday, Jan. 14: At 4:15 am a deputy investigated a harassing text message received by a resident in the 2300 block of Highway 25 in Willow Township.
Monday, Jan. 13: At 12:21 am a deputy was asked to help locate a distraught male in Scranton who may have had intentions of hurting himself. The subject was later found to be safe. At 9:45 am a deputy investigated the theft of personal property from a vehicle in the 300 block of 7th St in Grand Junction. The owner was reminded to keep her car doors locked.
Sunday, Jan. 12: At 9:32 pm a deputy was dispatched to a residence in the 1000 block of State Street in Scranton for a reported domestic altercation. After an investigation the deputy determined he will issue an arrest warrant for the male subject at that residence.
Saturday, Jan. 11: Routine activity reported.
Friday, Jan. 10: At 12:04 pm a deputy was asked to check the report of trespassing and possible criminal mischief to a rural residence in the 1700 block of X Ave in Junction township. The deputy found the residence and other property to be secure. At 3:30 pm a deputy was advised that a Churdan fireman checked a residence in the 300 block of Hill St in Churdan after a neighbor reported hearing a loud explosion and possibly sighting smoke. The fireman advised he found nothing at the residence. At 7:57 pm a deputy was dispatched for the report of several persons spotlighting deer near County Road N-65 and 175th St in Kendrick Township. The deputy arrived and gathered preliminary information. A DNR conservation officer will follow up.
Thursday, Jan. 9: At 12:20 pm a deputy helped a resident in the 900 block of X Ave in Junction Township with the enforcement of a no contact order for her protection.
Wednesday, Jan. 8: Routine activity reported.
Tuesday, Jan. 7: At 3:40 am a deputy as dispatched to the report of several persons being seen in and around a vacant residence in the 400 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction. The deputy determined that the male and female had permission to be at the residence.
Monday, Jan. 6: At 1:28 a deputy assisted the driver of a disabled diesel pickup truck on T Ave and County Road E-18 in Paton Township. At 12:12 pm two deputies responded to the report of a domestic assault that occurred in the 800 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. After an investigation the deputies arrested Angus Lee Foutch of Grand Junction for domestic abuse assault- D felony.* At 2pm a deputy investigated the reported theft of a wallet from a pickup truck that was parked in the 500 block of W. Stanford St in Jefferson.
Sunday, Jan. 5: At 8:57 pm a deputy was dispatched to a reported downed electrical power line in the 100 block of G Ave in Highland Township.
Saturday, Jan. 4: At 7:15 pm an officer investigated a domestic altercation and the possible theft of a motor vehicle from a residence in the 1400 block of Highway 144 in Junction Township. At 7:29 pm a deputy was dispatched to a reported occupied vehicle parked in a private driveway in the 1300 block of C Ave in Kendrick Township.. The deputy evaluated the driver and subsequently arrested Patrick Paul Schon of Glidden for OWI-third offense.*
Friday, Jan. 3: At 6:49 pm a deputy was not able to locate a reported suspicious vehicle on X Ave near 260th St in Washington Township.
Thursday, Jan. 2: At 11:55 am two deputies and Churdan fire and rescue responded to a reported vehicle on fire inside a garage at 404 Bell St in Churdan. The car, which is owned by Craig Burbank of that address, was pulled from the garage and extinguished. The car sustained major damage with only smoke damage to the garage. At 5:57 pm a deputy responded to a car-deer accident on Highway 4 south of Jefferson near the river bridge. Larry Dean Monthei of Cooper was northbound when a deer ran onto the roadway and struck the side of his 2011 Chevrolet Traverse. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $2,500.
Wednesday, Jan. 1: At 8:20 pm a deputy investigated a gas drive-off from Casey’s General Store in Scranton.
In all cases when a defendant has been charged this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
