FSA county committee ballots due Jan. 17

Farmers in Greenbrier, Franklin, Jackson, Scranton and Willow townships in Greene County will elect a member to the USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committee. Kim Bates of Scranton is seeking re-election to the post.

Other committee members are Mick Towers of Churdan and Todd Van Horn of Jefferson. Nicole Schilling of Jefferson is a non-voting minority member.

Eligible farmers who received a ballot Nov. 4 are instructed to destroy those ballots, and instead use a ballot with the word “corrected” printed on the outside of the mailing, the ballot itself, and the return envelope. Only the corrected ballots will be counted. Ballots must be returned in person to local FSA offices by Jan. 17 or postmarked by that date.

FSA county committee members are an important component of the operations of FSA and provide a link between the agricultural community and USDA. Farmers and ranchers help deliver FSA programs at the local level, applying their knowledge and judgment to make decisions on commodity price support programs; conservation programs; incentive indemnity and disaster programs for some commodities; emergency programs and eligibility . FSA committees operate within official regulations designed to carry out federal laws.

To be eligible to vote, farmers and ranchers must participate or cooperate in an FSA program. Eligible voters who did not receive a ballot can obtain one from the FSA office at 1403 N. Elm in Jefferson.
