Jefferson Matters: Main Street’s Tower View Team hopes to “bring smiles to faces and add color to lives that are somewhat in a dreary part of the year,” team member Amy Roberts told the county board of supervisors Monday morning.
Roberts explained a plan to put “sweaters” on all 21 trees on the courthouse square. The trunks will be wrapped with colorful knit or crocheted pieces. The TVT wants to install the blankets Jan. 26 and leave them on for three weeks. “We’ll be checking in on the trees throughout the time to be sure the blankets are still looking nice, and if they’re not, they’re easily removed by cutting them off with scissors. We want to make sure it looks good because it not only represents the county. It represents us, as well,” Roberts said.
“It will just give one more reason people should come visit our beautiful community,” she added.
Roberts asked for the supervisors’ approval of the project before further planning is done.
Volunteers will knit the blankets, or perhaps sew them together from thrift shop sweaters or afghans. The TVT hopes the cost will be minimal.
“I can’t imagine there’s anyone that would be against putting a sweater on a tree,” supervisor John Muir said.
Supervisor Tom Contner encouraged the TVT. “It’ll look nice. Go for it,” he said.
By consensus, the supervisors approved the plan. Watch for more information.
Roberts also shared with the supervisors that the TVT is still working toward rooftop art visible from the top of the Bell Tower. The team hopes to have art installed next summer on at least one building.
