Police blotter – September 2019

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:

Monday, Sept.30: At 9:05 am a resident advised she had captured a stray dog in the 600 block of S. Olive St. The animal placed the dog in the animal holding facility. At 3:55 pm an officer was requested to meet with a juvenile male at Greene County Middle School. The juvenile reported another male juvenile had pushed him off of his bike and then rode away with it. Bristol township clerk resigns; wife faces criminal charges

An investigation of delinquencies by Bristol Township in its payments for fire protection services has led to criminal charges against Christine Durlam, 51, the wife of township clerk Justin Durlam.

Christine Durlam is charged with theft- first degree and fraudulent practices- third degree. Justin Durlam told Greene County sheriff deputy Shane Allen, who investigated the case, that he knew his wife had been writing checks on the township’s account for a couple of years. Greene County district court, week ending Sept. 9

In Greene County District court Erick Paul Johnson, 48, of Jefferson was sentenced Sept. 6 to one year in jail after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of dependent adult abuse- serious. The jail time was suspended and he was placed on probation to the Iowa Department of Corrections for one year. He was fined $315 with a $110.25 surcharge. Johnson was also found guilty of dependent adult abuse- simple. On that charge he was sentenced to 10 days in jail; he must pay sheriff’s room and board charges for the time he serves. He was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge; both were suspended. A judgment was entered for $10,032.53 victim restitution He must pay restitution for his court appointed attorney not to exceed $1,600. Greene County magistrate court, week ending Sept. 9

A judgment was entered in Greene County magistrate court against John Emery Welch of Grand Junction on a charge of assault- simple. He was placed on probation with Boone/Greene County Probation for one year. He was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge. Greene County district court, week ending Aug. 29

In Greene County district court, attorney Angela L. Campbell, who is the court appointed attorney for Jeremy Joe Orfield, 27, of Jefferson, filed a motion for a retrial.

A jury on July 25 found Orfield not guilty of sex abuse- second degree and lascivious acts with a child- solicitation. The jury found him guilty of indecent contact with a child. The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of two years and a fine up to $6,250. He would also be under the supervision of the Department of Corrections for an additional 10 years. Greene County magistrate court, week ending Sept. 29

A judgment was entered in Greene County magistrate court Aug. 28 against Laura Nicole Cox of Nevada on a charge of trespass- first offense (casino self-exclusion). Cox was fined $200 with a $70 surcharge and a $125 Law Enforcement Initiative surcharge. Court costs were $60.

Drew Aaron Cavener of Panora was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge on a charge of public intoxication. Court costs were $60. Continue reading Greene County magistrate court, week ending Sept. 29
