Gravel dust contributes to head-on collision

Two Greene County men were injured, one of them seriously, in a head-on collision on V Ave south of 185th St in Junction Township Dec. 11. The collision occurred at 3:14 pm.

According to a report by the Iowa State Patrol, Connor Gunn, 18, of Jefferson was northbound driving a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Wade Sohm, 33, of Grand Junction was southbound driving a 2016 Mac 600CXU. The vehicles collided head-on. Continue reading Gravel dust contributes to head-on collision

Greene County district court, week ending Dec. 4

In Greene County district court Beth Anne Laurent, 49, of Des Moines was sentenced to one year in jail after she pleaded guilty to a charge of operating a vehicle without owner’s consent, amended from theft- second degree. All but 14 days of the jail time was suspended; the days are consecutive to jail time in another Greene County felony case. She was  placed on  probation with Boone/Greene County Probation for one year. Laurent was fined $625 with a $218.75 surcharge; both were suspended. She must pay a $125 Law Enforcement Initiative surcharge, $1,200 restitution for her court appointed attorney’s fees and $100 court costs. (Sentencing: Honorable Joseph B. Greene County district court, week ending Nov. 22

In Greene County district court Joel Robert Simpson, 64, of Jefferson was sentenced to 1 year in the county jail after he changed his plea to guilty Nov. 20 to a charge of operating while intoxicated- third offense. All but 14 days of the jail time was suspended and he was placed on probation for one year. He may complete the Des Moines Area Community College 48-hour alcohol education program in lieu of two days of the jail term. He must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. Simpson was fined $1,875 with a $656.25 surcharge. One half of the fine and surcharge will be waived if he obtains a temporary restricted license. He must pay a $10 surcharge for drug abuse resistance education (DARE) and $100 court costs. Friday, Nov. 29: At 12:32 am after receiving information during a traffic stop, officers applied for and executed a narcotics search warrant at 307 W. Lincoln Way, Apt. 3. The officers believe the informant tipped off the residents after providing the officers the information, as nothing illegal was located in the apartment during the search. Saturday, Nov. 30: At 12:02 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 and County Road P-33 (S Ave) west of Grand Junction. Greene County district court, week ending Nov. 14

In Greene County district court Douglas Joseph Strang, 62, of West Des Moines was sentenced Nov. 8 to two years in prison after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated- second offense. All but seven days of the prison time was suspended and he was placed on probation for two years. He must complete a community college drinking drivers school, and he must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. He may complete the Des Moines Area Community College 48-hour alcohol education program in lieu of two days of the jail time. Strang was fined $1,875 with a $656.25 surcharge; one-half will be waived if he obtains a temporary restricted driver’s license. All but 14 days of the jail time was suspended and she was placed on probation for one year. Laurent was fined $625 with a $218.75 surcharge and a $125 Law Enforcement Initiative surcharge. Greene County district court, week ending Oct. 25

In Greene County district court Curtis Wesley Jurgensen, 55, of Woodward was sentenced Oct. 18 to 60 days in jail after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of possession of marijuana- second offense. All but six days of the jail term was suspended and he was placed on probation for one year. He must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. Jurgensen was fined $750 with a $262.50 surcharge; both were suspended. He must pay a $10 DARE (drug abuse resistance education) surcharge and a $120 Law Enforcement Initiative surcharge.
