Greene County district court, week ending April 19

In Greene County district court Melissa Marie Kroupa, 38, of Grimes was sentenced to five years in prison April 13 after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of burglary-third degree (motor vehicle). The prison term was suspended and she was placed on probation for three years. She must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at her own expense. Kroupa was fined $750 with a $262.50 surcharge; both were suspended. The judge ruled she is unable to pay for her court appointed attorney. She must pay a $125 Law Enforcement Initiative surcharge and $734.06 court costs. A charge of burglary- second degree was dismissed. (Sentencing: Honorable Joseph B. Greene County district court, week ending April 12

In Greene County district court Michael Lynn Heard Jr, 56, of Jefferson was sentenced April 5 to 30 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to one count of theft- fifth degree, amended from forgery. He will receive credit for time already served in jail. The $65 fine was suspended and restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees was waived, but he must pay a $22.75 surcharge, a $125 Law Enforcement Initiative surcharge, $2,563.73 restitution and $947.72 court costs. Greene County district court, week ending April 4

In Greene County district court Michael Lynn Heard Sr, 56, of Jefferson was sentenced April 5 to two years in jail at a contested sentencing hearing on charges of assault on a peace officer causing bodily injury. The jail time was suspended. He was fined $625 with a $218.75 surcharge. Heard was sentenced to one year in jail on a charge of criminal mischief- fourth degree. In Greene County district court Jesse Dean Seyler, 26,of Carroll was sentenced March 9 to 60 days in jail after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated- first offense. All but two days of the jail time was suspended. He must complete the recommendations of a substance abuse evaluation he has already undergone, and he must complete a community college drinking drivers school He may complete the Des Moines Area Community College Weekend Offender program in lieu of the jail time and the drinking drivers school. He was placed on informal probation for one year. Seyler was fined $1,250 with a $437.50 surcharge and a $10 surcharge for drug abuse resistance education. Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:

Saturday, March 31: At 7:50 am staff at Hy-Vee reported 16 separate thefts from the store that were committed by the same suspect. The thefts had occurred between 1/01/18 and 3/01/18. The merchandise taken was food and alcohol products.
