Sheriff’s report – February 2020

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Saturday, Feb. 29: At 5:37 am a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on its roof in the ditch in the area of 300th St and X Ave in Washington township. At 1:49 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Rippey. At 3:54 pm a deputy assisted the Grand Junction fire department with a small field fire in the 2200 block of 210th St in Junction Township. The fire was extinguished quickly.

Friday, Feb. 28: At 2:03 pm a deputy assisted with a stray dog found on a property in the 2200 block of V Ave in Washington Township. The dog was transported to the animal shelter in Jefferson. At 5:09 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 700 block of Hill St in Churn.

Thursday, Feb. 27: At 3:45 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 800 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, Feb. 26: At 3:44 pm a deputy assisted an Alabama sheriff’s office with trying to locate a runaway in Grand Junction. At 8:10 pm a deputy investigated hit-and-run damage to a street sign at the intersection of 2nd Street and Highway 144 in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, Feb. 25: At 1:51 pm a deputy investigated suspicious person in the 1400 block of Kirkwood Ave in Jackson Township. At 3:45 pm deputies assisted Carroll County deputies with stolen property in the area of 230th Street and Hillcrest Ave in Jackson Township. Randall Gosch, 47, of Carroll was arrested for possession of stolen property* that was taken from a business in Sac County. At 4:10 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 300 block of S. 7th St in Grand Junction.

Monday, Feb. 24: At 8;20 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious person on Highway 30 near T Ave east of Jefferson. At 11:23 pm the sheriff, a deputy, fire departments from Scranton, Jefferson, Ralston, Glidden and Carroll, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a large fire at Scranton Manufacturing in the 100 block of State St in Scranton.

Sunday, Feb. 23: At 3:34 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of careless driving around Scranton.

Saturday, Feb. 22: At 8:43 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 1600 block of 243rd St in Grant Township. At 9:56 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 2400 block of 337th S in Washington Township.

Friday, Feb. 21: At 10 pm a deputy arrested Susan Travis, 53, of Dayton on a warrant for trespass*.

Thursday, Feb. 20: At 6:45 am the sheriff investigated a car-deer accident on 245th St and M Ave in Jackson Township. Joshua Halterman, 45, of Jefferson struck a deer with his 2012 Honda Civic, causing an estimated $2,500 damage to the vehicle. At 10:43 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 500 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, Feb. 19: Routine activity reported.

Tuesday, Feb. 18: At 8:57 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on 130th St near Highway 4 east of Churdan. Katerina Stilson, 23, of Paton lost control of her 2003 Honda Pilot and entered the south ditch causing an estimated $5,000 damage to the vehicle. There were no injuries; the vehicle was towed. At 11 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 1400 block of County Road E-57 in Franklin Township.

Monday, Feb. 17: Routine activity reported.

Sunday, Feb. 16: At 3:40 am a deputy investigated a complaint of gun shots in the 700 block of 13th St in Grand Junction. At 10:46 am a deputy arrested LeeRoy Steadman III, 18, of Churdan on an arrest warrant for telephone dissemination of obscene material to a minor- first offense*. At 1 pm a deputy tried to located a dog running at large in the 1600 block of Highway 25 south of Scranton.

Saturday, Feb. 15: At 6:49 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on County Road E-53 and K Ave west of Jefferson. At 3:01 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 500 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 3:05 pm a deputy attempted to catch a dog running at large in the 800 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 4:04 pm a deputy attempted to catch a dog running at large on Highway 30 near County Road P-14 west of Jefferson.

Friday, Feb. 14: At 5:18 pm a deputy attempted to catch a dog running a large near Sparky’s One Stop in Jefferson. At 5:37 pm a deputy located two dogs running at large in the 2200 of R Ave in Franklin Township. Both dogs were taken to the animal holding facility.

Thursday, Feb. 13: At 8:30 pm a deputy investigated a possible violation of a no contact order by an inmate. At 9:02 am a deputy investigated a railroad crossing arm malfunction in the 500 block of Highway 144 in Paton Township. At 10 am the sheriff investigated a complaint of illegal dumping on 290th St near P Ave in Franklin Township. The items that were found were from the VFW in Jefferson that was later found to have been burglarized. At 4:46 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Churdan. At 6:45 pm a deputy conducted tobacco compliance checks throughout the county and found no violations. At 8:05 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop in Grand Junction. Joshua Blumberg, 24, of Coon Rapids was a passenger in the vehicle; there were arrest warrants for him from Carroll and Guthrie counties for probation violation. While the driver was looking for the insurance card the deputy observed drug paraphernalia. A search was done of the vehicle and marijuana, methamphetamine, wax marijuana, and drug paraphernalia were located. Blumberg was charged with possession with intent to deliver methamphetamines, possession of a controlled substance- third offense, and possession of drug paraphernalia*. Dakota Barrett, 20, of Grand Junction was also charged with possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance- first offense, and possession of drug paraphernalia*. The driver, Whitney Campbell, 22, of Jefferson had a medical issue and arrest warrants will be issued for the same offenses.

Wednesday, Feb. 12: At 4:32 pm a deputy checked the welfare of a person walking on Highway 30 near K Ave west of Jefferson. At 6:50 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of two pit bulls attacking sheep in the 1500 block of 252nd St in Jackson Township.

Tuesday, Feb. 11: At 9:36 am a deputy investigated a 911 hang-up from the 2200 block of 120th St in Paton Township.

Monday, Feb. 10: Routine activity reported.

Sunday, Feb. 9: At 2:22 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 400 block of 2nd St in Rippey. At 8:38 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of someone shooting at horses in the 1500 block of Orchard Ave in Hardin Township. No horses were hit and it is believed it was hunters chasing coyotes in the area.

Saturday, Feb. 8: At 1:33 am a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Scranton. At 4:42 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near County Road P-33 (S Ave) west of Grand Junction. James Smith, 19, of Grand Junction swerved to miss a deer and lost control of his 2003 GMC Sierra, striking a telephone pole. Damage to his pickup truck was estimated at $10,000. The utility pole was not damaged. At 5:11 pm a deputy investigated an attempted burglary at the Rippey baseball field concession stand.

Friday, Feb. 7: At 3:28 pm a deputy arrested Brittennie LeClair, 27, of Churdan for 33 counts of violation of a no contact order*.

Thursday, Feb. 6: At 3:48 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Churdan.

Wednesday, Feb. 5: At 5:54 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Neola Ave.= near 250th St. Joseph Walston, 25, of Jefferson struck a deer with his 2014 Ford Escape. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $750. At 10:38 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 900 block of 205th St in Bristol Township. At 9:18 pm a deputy assisted with a prank call about a stabbing in the 1600 block of Neola Ave. At 11:41 pm a deputy investigated a concern of three dogs taken to the Boone Humane Society that were from the 1900 block of County Road P-14 in Greene County.

Tuesday, Feb. 4: At 8:24 am a deputy issued a salvage tag for a deer on 200th St and I Ave in Bristol Township. At 8:30 am a deputy located a black lab running at large in the 1900 block of County Road P-14 (J Ave) in Greenbrier Township. The dog was taken to the animal holding facility. At 9:52 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 1000 block of Maple St in Scranton. At 7:37 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD an arrest. At 7:52 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in Dana.

Monday, Feb. 3: At 1:52 am  deputy investigated a 911 hang-up call that located in Grand Junction. At 10:22 pm a deputy arrested Courtney Kern, 33, of Jamaica for driving while license barred*.

Sunday, Feb. 2: At 1:30 am the sheriff and deputies assisted Guthrie and Carroll County deputies and the Iowa State Patrol with a pursuit on Highway 141 near Highway 4. The driver was stopped with stop sticks. At 10:09 am a deputy conducted a traffic stop on Main St in Grand Junction and arrested Melynda Weltha, 44, of Grand Junction for driving while license revoked*.

Saturday, Feb. 1: At 10:39 am a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 700 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 3:42 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 800 block of Jordan Ave in Bristol Township. At 8:19 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of an underage party on Main S in Scranton. Everybody was found to be of age. At 10:54 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 600 block of Main St in Scranton. The vehicle was located crashed into a garage. Terry Anschutz, 24, of Scranton was arrested for operating while under the influence- first offense*. Damage to the garage was estimated at $1,500. Damage to Anschutz’s 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck was estimated at $1,500. At 11:06 pm a deputy’s vehicle was almost sideswiped by a driver. The deputy conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and arrested Craig Knobbe, 50, of Carroll for OWI- first offense*.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
