Adopt-a-Family gears up for Christmas food basket project

These boxes are packed and ready for pick up in the 2018 AAF Christmas food basket project.

Greene County Adopt-a-Family provided coats, snow pants, boots and other winter outerwear to 103 Greene County children earlier this month in its Operation Warm Hearts.

With that project completed, the Adopt-a-Family (AAF) board has turned to its Christmas campaign, with plans to distribute food baskets Saturday, Dec. 21, from 11 am to 12:30 pm at Clover Hall on the Greene County Fairgrounds. For food safety reasons, all baskets must be picked up at that time.

Registration forms for the Christmas food baskets are available at the New Opportunities Family Development Center at 1401 N. Elm St in Jefferson. This is the only location where forms are available, “We are continuing to develop our partnership with New Opportunities with the goal of having one central location for Greene County where programs such as Christmas food baskets and Operation Warm Hearts can be serviced,” an AAF board member said. “This means families may only need to make one stop to register for available assistance.”

The deadline for application forms is Nov. 22. Applicants are required to provide the names and ages of all adults and children residing in the household and a functioning phone number.

In 2018 food and other household items were provided to more than 160 Greene County families in the Christmas project. The AAF board anticipates serving even more families this year.

As always, monetary contributions ae needed to purchase food. Monetary donations can be mailed to AAF, PO Box 364, Jefferson, IA 50129, or deposited directly at any Greene County Peoples Bank location.

“Greene County is a generous community and we come together to support our friends and neighbors. Adopt-a-Family appreciates the community’s generosity and looks forward to another successful holiday campaign,” the board spokesperson said.
