Sheriff’s report – October 2019

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Thursday, Oct. 31: At 7:06 am a deputy investigated an assault in Rippey.

Wednesday, Oct. 30: At 4:46 pm a deputy assisted with a tractor and wagon that had lost a wheel and spilled grain on the roadway on County Road E-26 (170th St) and Y Ave in Junction Township.

Tuesday, Oct. 29: Routine activity reported.

Monday, Oct. 28: At 10:21 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 900 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 3:09 pm a deputy placed a black lab that was located on Highway 4 near 305th Street in Franklin Township in the animal holding facility. At 4:18 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Grand Junction.

Sunday, Oct. 27: At 8:45 am a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Grand Junction. At 9:57 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 200 block of S. 6th St in Grand Junction.

Saturday, Oct. 26: At 7:35 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 400 block of Main St in Grand Junction. At 9:25 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 400 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Friday, Oct. 25: A 2:12 pm at deputy investigated a theft in the 500 block of County Road P-29 (N Ave) in Dawson Township. A 8:37 pm a deputy arrested Richard Sabus, 56, of Churdan on an arrest warrant out of Calhoun County*.

Thursday, Oct. 24: Routine activity reported.

Wednesday, Oct. 23: At 6:07 pm a deputy investigated a  complaint of harassment in Scranton.

Tuesday, Oct. 22: At 3:41 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 300 block of S. 7th St in Grand Junction. Dakota Barrett, 19, of Grand Junction was arrested for burglary- second degree, theft- fifth degree, assault- simple, and trespass- first offense*. At 5:14 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Grand Junction. At 8:02 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Neola Ave near 260th St south of Jefferson. Marc Clausen, 64, of Panora struck a deer with his vehicle but had left the scene and called in the accident.

Monday, Oct. 21: At 7:28 am a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 near Hillcrest Ave west of Jefferson. Karina Torres, 22, of Denison was eastbound passing a long line of cars when another vehicle came to pass. Torres swerved to miss the car and went into the north ditch. There was no damage to either vehicle.

Sunday, Oct. 20: Routine activity reported.

Saturday, Oct. 19: At 2:47 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a traffic stop on Highway 30 near Sparky’s. Dale Spaulding, 51, of Ellsworth was arrested on an outstanding Hamilton County warrant for domestic abuse assault*. During booking at the jail Spaulding was found to be hiding controlled substances. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance in a correctional facility (two counts)*. At 12:23 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in Scranton. At 6:20 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of illegal dumping on 222nd St and Parkland Ave in Grant Township. At 10:02 pm a deputy attempted to locate a cow out in the 2400 block of K Ave in Greenbrier Township.

Friday, Oct. 18: At 6:56 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident in the 1700 block of Quaker Ave in Grant Township. William Hick, 61, of Rippey struck a deer with his 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, causing an estimated $6,000 damage to the vehicle. At 10:53 am a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 2200 block of R Ave in Franklin Township. At 11:38 am a deputy investigated a complaint of illegal burning in Grand Junction.

Thursday, Oct. 17: At 7:15 am a deputy investigated a careless driving complaint on Highway 30 near M Ave west of Jefferson. Samantha Henderson, 26, of Jefferson was westbound driving her 2009 Chevrolet Impala carelessly and struck the driver’s side of an eastbound 2001 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck driven by Anthony Renner, 62, of Jefferson. Henderson was taken by Greene County Ambulance to the Greene County Medical Center for minor injuries. Both vehicles in the accident were totaled. The Jefferson PD and the Iowa State Patrol also responded to the accident. At 1:28 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a railroad employee urinating toward the highway near Highway 30 and W Ave east of Grand Junction. At 4:31 pm a deputy, Grand Junction fire and rescue, and Greene County Ambulance responded to a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 at Highway 144 in Grand Junction. Matthew Wetrich, 41, of Jefferson was eastbound on Highway 30 driving a 2016 Kia Sedona. Jacob Lovell, 24, of Perry was driving a 2015 Chrysler 200 (direction of travel not provided). He failed to yield the right of way and pulled out in front of Wetrich. Both drivers were transported to Greene County Medical Center by Greene County Ambulance. Lovell was cited for failure to obey a stop sign. At 7:03 pm a deputy attempted to locate the emu that was spotted in the 300 block of 180th St in Kendrick Township. At 7:46 pm a deputy attempted to locate a cow out in the 2400 block of K Ave in Greenbrier Township. At 10:25 pm the sheriff and deputies assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office with a stand-off in Stuart.

Wednesday, Oct. 16: At 5:51 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near D Ave  west of Scranton. Aaron Holmes, 21, of Glidden struck a deer with a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, causing an estimated $3,000 damage to the pickup truck. At 7:23 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, Oct. 15: At 12:54 am a deputy investigated a possible burglary in the 900 block of Sand St in Churdan. The deputy located a car that matched the description of the vehicle at the residence. Shane Jewett, 43, of Paton was arrested for operating while intoxicated- second offense*. At 1:10 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 400 block of S. 11th St in Grand Junction. At 4:55 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1000 block of Railroad Stin , Grand Junction.

Monday, Oct 14: At 11:39 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with two-vehicle accident on N. Vine and W. Reed St. At 3:34 pm a deputy investigated dogs running at large on Highway 144 near 250th St north of Grand Junction . At 7:48 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 144 near 130th St east of Paton. Errol Meinecke, 79, of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox, causing an estimated $500 damage to the vehicle.

Sunday, Oct. 13: At 7:21 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1800 block of 195th St in Franklin Township.

Saturday, Oct. 12: At 11:07 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township.

Friday, Oct. 11: At 9 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 1000 block of H Ave in Bristol Township. At 3:04 pm a deputy arrested Richard Finch, 83, of Jefferson for operating while intoxicated*.

Thursday, Oct. 10: At 9:40 am a deputy investigated a theft in Grand Junction. At 12:56 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 2300 block of 260th St in Junction Township. At 5:15 pm the sheriff and Jefferson fire department responded to propane tank leaking after a tree fell on it in the 1400 block of I Ave in Jackson Township. At 5:15 pm the Greene County sheriff’s office, Gowrie police department, Paton fire, Churdan fire, Greene County Ambulance, and Jefferson fire department responded to a vehicle in the West Buttrick Creek floating down stream with one female in the vehicle. Ouida Wiggins, 55, of Paton lost control of her 2003 Jeep Liberty and entered the creek that was bank full of water. The vehicle was a total loss. Deputy sheriff Shane Allen and Churdan fireman Nate Byerly jumped into the creek when the driver went under the water. They got the driver back to the shore and Greene County Ambulance transported her to the Greene County Medical Center with minor injuries.

Wednesday, Oct. 9: At 3:12 pm Greene County deputies assisted by the Carroll County sheriff’s office conducted a search warrant for stolen property in the 2600 block of Zephyr Ave in Willow Township. Stolen property was located at the residence. Charges are pending. At 5:22 pm a deputy investigated a railroad crossing with metal sticking up on Highway 144 near 150th St in Paton Township.

Tuesday, Oct. 8: At 8:06 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 300 block of 119th St. At 10:13 am a deputy attempted to locate a reported emu running at large on M Ave near Highway 30 west of Jefferson. At 9:30 pm a deputy investigated an assault in Scranton.

Monday, Oct. 7: At 12:31 pm deputies assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office with trying to locate a burglary suspect. At 6:47 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle personal injury accident at the intersection of County Road P-14 (J Ave) and 170th St in Bristol Township. Lester Johns, 63, of Scranton was southbound on P14 driving his 1991 Chevrolet C1500 truck. Haylee Duckett, 16, of Jefferson was eastbound on 170th St driving a 2006 Toyota Tundra and struck the passenger side of Johns’ truck. Duckett was transported to Greene County Medical Center by private vehicle. Damage to both vehicles exceeded value. At 9:52 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department with trying to locate the driver of a motorcycle that fled in the 700 block of N. Chestnut St.

Sunday, Oct. 6: At 1:47 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Highway 4 near 210th St north of Jefferson. At 11:11 am a deputy investigated a two-car accident in the 2300 block of 337th St in Washington Township. Jesse Bennett, 23, of Perry was westbound driving a 2004 Ford F150 pickup truck. Anthony Moore, 33, of Perry was eastbound driving a 1997 Ford F250 pickup truck towing a trailer. Both drivers came to the crest of a hill and collided in the center of the roadway. There were no injuries. Damage to each vehicle was estimated at $15,000.

Saturday, Oct. 5: At 7:15 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on County Road E-57 (290th St) near B Ave in Willow Township. Billy Welder, 56, of Cooper struck a deer with his 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck causing an estimated $12,000 damage to the vehicle. At 6:21 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Scranton. At 7:34 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Highway 30 near County Road P-33 (S Ave) west of Grand Junction.

Friday, Oct. 4: At 6:08 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of an emu running at large on Y Ave near 210th St in Junction Township.

Thursday, Oct. 3: At 2:45 pm the sheriff investigated a complaint of theft in Churdan. At 5:51 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Grand Junction. At 6:41 pm a deputy attempted to stop a motorcycle driver for speeding in Grand Junction. The driver, Jacob Vreugdenil, 23, of Grand Junction, sped up and then lost control during a turn. Vreugdenhil was cited for driving while suspended, failure to maintain control, and no insurance- accident related. Damage to the 1996 Suzuki GSXR750 was estimated at $1,000.

Wednesday, Oct. 2: At 11:55 pm an officer investigated a  complaint of harassment  in Paton.

Tuesday, Oct. 1: At 3:20 pm a deputy assisted DHS with an investigation in the 1600 block of Newberry Ave in Grant Township. Jodi Ganoe, 44, of Jefferson was arrested on a warrant for violation of a no contact order*. At 5:18 pm a deputy arrested Kole Higgins, 24, of Scranton for burglary- third degree and theft- second degree*. At 6:38 pm a deputy investigated a backing accident in the 600 block of State St in Scranton. Linda Gustoff, 70, of Scranton was backing her 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan when she struck a parked, unoccupied 2006 Pontiac G6. Damage to the Pontiac was estimated at $1,500. Damage to Gustoff’s minivan was minor.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
